Chongqing - Overseas manufacturing has become a crucial expansion strategy for Chinese automakers, with Brazil emerging as a hotspot. On March 26, Chongqing-based automaker Changan Automobile officially commenced production at its new plant in Anápolis, Brazil, marking another shift from product exportation to industrial localization.
During the launch ceremony, the first locally manufactured Changan UNI-T model rolled off the assembly line. The facility’s initial phase will produce three models featuring various powertrains, including internal combustion engines, hybrids, and plug-in hybrids. All models will have flex-fuel engines capable of running on gasoline, ethanol, or any blend of the two, catering directly to Brazil's ethanol-driven energy market.
Brazil is the centerpiece of Changan's globalization strategy. This new facility represents a milestone in transitioning from simple vehicle exports to building localized industrial supply chains. Backed by its technology, operational systems, and brand strength, Changan aims to deepen its integration with local industries to build a stable, sustainable development ecosystem.
"Brazil is not only an investment hotspot but also a strategic stronghold for Changan’s long-term vision," Zhu Huarong, Chairman of China Changan Automobile Group said at the event. He introduced that Changan will adhere to a development philosophy that integrates long-term planning, localization, systematic operations, and ESG initiatives, taking root in Brazil to serve the broader Latin American market.
The ceremony was attended by key dignitaries, including Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, and Chinese Ambassador to Brazil Zhu Qingqiao. President Lula praised Changan’s capabilities and commitment to localization, describing China as Brazil’s best partner. He emphasized that the new plant will create jobs, improve local livelihoods, and support Brazil's reindustrialization process.
Looking ahead, Changan plans to leverage the plant's hybrid technology foundation to introduce a full lineup of electrified vehicles. The company aims to drive an upgrade across Brazil's automotive supply, innovation, and capital chains to foster a shared, green, and low-carbon transportation ecosystem.
