Chongqing- Tesla has launched its largest highway service area Supercharger project in China, bringing 55 new stations in Chongqing on March 28.

The first phase of the project includes 212 charging piles across 55 Tesla V4 Supercharging stations, all located at highway service areas. Tesla said this is the company's largest one-time investment in highway service-area Superchargers in China since it entered the Chinese market in 2013.

The newly opened stations are spread across key highway transport nodes around Chongqing's urban core, as well as the city's northeastern and southeastern regions.
According to the company, the network now places a Supercharging station at an average interval of about one hour of driving along major routes in the region. The sites are designed to support electric vehicle travel within Chongqing and improve access to neighboring provincial-level regions, including Sichuan, Hubei, Hunan, Shaanxi, and Guizhou.
Tesla said the project covers the Chongqing sections of 10 national expressways. In China, national expressways are long-distance highways that connect major cities and regions across the country. Tesla described the Chongqing rollout as a milestone for its charging infrastructure network in China in terms of station scale, charger volume, construction efficiency and regional reach.
The stations are also open to non-Tesla drivers. Drivers using other vehicle brands can charge by scanning a code through a WeChat mini-program.
Tesla has continued expanding its charging footprint in China in recent years. As of March 2026, Tesla had built and opened more than 2,500 Supercharging stations and over 12,000 Supercharging piles across the Chinese mainland. In addition, the company operates more than 650 destination charging stations and over 2,500 destination charging piles.
Destination charging stations, unlike the company's faster Superchargers, are usually located at hotels, restaurants, shopping malls and tourist sites, where drivers can recharge over longer stops using lower-power AC chargers.
The company added that its charging network now covers 100% of provincial capitals and municipalities, as well as most prefecture-level cities in the Chinese mainland.
Huang Lei, general manager of Tesla Western China, said the concentrated launch of Supercharger stations in Chongqing highway service areas further strengthened Tesla's confidence in the Chinese market.
He said the project also laid a solid foundation for expanding similar highway charging projects into more provinces and cities, as Tesla continues building what he described as a multilayered fast-charging network covering urban and rural areas, highways, and tourist destinations.
