By DENG, NAN|Apr 22,2026

Chongqing - In a powerful display of sports diplomacy, a youth basketball delegation from Australia’s Queensland arrived in Chongqing on April 18 for what has become a five-day journey of friendly competition and cultural exchange. The visit, which runs through April 22, is fostering people-to-people connections between the two nations through the universal language of sport.

On April 20, the delegation visited Chongqing Weiming School, where they participated in the opening ceremony of the 2026 China-Australia Youth International Basketball Friendship Match under the theme "Cross to the Future." The event featured friendly games and a series of interactive activities designed to bring young athletes from both countries closer together.

Before the games began, the Australian delegates toured the international department of Chongqing Weiming School, where they explored student-led projects showcasing creativity and innovation. From handmade crafts to robotics and drone demonstrations, the exhibits drew keen interest from the visiting teenagers, who paused to take photos, ask questions, and share ideas in a warm and engaging atmosphere.

The tournament opened with an energetic cheerleading performance by students from Weiming Academy Primary School, setting an uplifting tone for the day's competition. Their spirited welcome not only electrified the gymnasium but also conveyed the heartfelt enthusiasm of Chongqings youth for their Australian peers.

In her opening remarks, Meaghan Shaw, Australias Consul-General in Southwest China, noted that sport is a universal language that transcends culture and speech, teaching young people about teamwork, respect, and resilience - values cherished in both China and Australia.

She highlighted the long history of exchanges between Chongqing and Australia, recalling that in 1941, Australia established its first diplomatic mission in China right here in Chongqing. Today, she said, people-to-people interactions continue to strengthen this enduring friendship. Shaw encouraged youth from both countries to make the most of this exchange opportunity, to learn from one another on and off the court, to experience the charm of Chongqing, and to build lasting bonds across the miles.

The friendly matches followed, featuring separate competitions for U16 and U18 age groups. Players from both sides displayed strong teamwork, determination, and sportsmanship, making for highly competitive yet respectful games that captured the energy and passion of youth through sport.

During a break, Australian U18 player Talbot shared his impressions. He said the warmth of Chongqing’s people left him with a strong first impression, and the trip had offered him a real taste of cultural diversity. He added that while he had learned about China’s technological development through social media before the visit, some of what he saw in person still exceeded his expectations. Talbot believes that bringing together young people from different countries through activities like these is highly valuable, helping to foster positive friendships between nations.

More than just a sports event, this exchange was an opportunity for cultural understanding and genuine connection. Through basketball, young Chinese and Australians have built new friendships, deepened mutual appreciation, and created memories that will endure well beyond the final buzzer.

In addition, the delegation will also play friendly games at Chongqing No. 2 Foreign Language School and Chongqing Bashu Ivy School.
