Reading Chinese Modernization Through Theory, Chongqing Practice, and Global Dialogue

By RAN ZHENG|Jun 14,2026

Chongqing – The Book Exhibition on the Global Significance of Chinese Modernization will be held on June 18 as a supporting event for the International Symposium on the Global Significance of Chinese Modernization at the Western China International Communication Organization.

The exhibition will provide a dedicated space for reading, exchange, and dialogue during the symposium. Structured around theory, practice, and discussion, it will bring together key Chinese theoretical works, publications on Chongqing’s modernization practices, and research outputs from international scholars and institutions across the Global South.

The exhibition is organized into three main sections: the Thought Leadership Zone, the Mutual Learning Zone, and the Chongqing Practice Zone.

The Thought Leadership Zone will showcase key works designed to help international readers understand the theoretical foundations of Chinese modernization.

Featured titles include Xi Jinping: The Governance of China (Volumes I–V), available in Chinese, English, and Spanish, as well as Up and Out of Poverty, also published in multiple languages.

Together, these works provide insight into China’s governance philosophy, development priorities, and policy approach. They also offer reference points for understanding how China has pursued its own path to modernization while engaging with broader global questions of development, poverty reduction, and governance.

The Mutual Learning Zone will feature Chinese academic works alongside publications from international institutions and scholars, emphasizing dialogue and mutual exchange.

A key highlight is the Serie Documentos research report series by the Latin American Council of Social Sciences. Available in English and Spanish, the reports reflect Latin American academic perspectives and contribute to broader Global South discussions on development models, governance, equality, and social transformation.

Also featured is Six Perspectives on Chinese Modernization, edited by Jiang Hui and available in Chinese, English, and Spanish. The book provides a systematic interpretation of Chinese modernization and aligns closely with the symposium’s core theme.

Another featured work is City Walks in Chongqing by Ali Cheshmehzangi, which explores Chongqing's urban life and sustainability through field-based observation, linking the city's local experience with shared issues facing Global South cities.

By showcasing works from China, Latin America, and other international academic communities, the exhibition aims to build a bridge between local practice and global dialogue.

The Chongqing Practice Zone will focus on the city's role as a local case of Chinese modernization. Among the featured titles is Hi, I'm Chongqing, a bilingual publication that introduces the city through its mountains, rivers, people, and urban life. The book helps explain why Chongqing stands out as one of China's most distinctive megacities and offers international readers an accessible way to understand the city's geography, culture, and development.

Another key title is Across Land and Sea: Chongqing’s Practice and Exploration in Institutional Opening-Up Through the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor. As the first publication in the “Land-Sea Book Series,” the book focuses on Chongqing’s efforts to build an inland opening-up hub and strengthen connections between western China and global markets.

Together, these publications present Chongqing not only as a city of mountains and rivers, but also as a case study in regional connectivity, urban governance, industrial transformation, and opening-up.

The exhibition is expected to attract scholars, publishers, and international participants. It invites visitors to explore Chinese modernization through theory, understand it through Chongqing’s practice, and engage with it through shared Global South perspectives.
