Chongqing - Marvel's Spider-Man: Brand New Day landed in Chinese mainland theaters on July 29 - two full days ahead of its North American debut on July 31. The Tom Holland-starrer grossed more than $35 million on its opening day, capturing 41% of all screenings with a 21% attendance rate. The performance secured the highest opening-day box office for an imported film in China's summer season in seven years.
Global Advance Release Makes Chinese Audiences the "First in the World"
The most significant shift this time is that China’s release date now leads the global rollout. Independent producer Peter Hu observed: “In the past, we were always ‘jet-lagged,’ waiting for buzz from North America. Now, even being just two days ahead is not about the time difference — it represents a structural shift in discourse power. China is no longer the final stop in global distribution, but the first battleground for shaping conversations and even influencing sequel production.”

Ms. Yi, head of the Muwei event team, also remarked, "In the past, fans had to wait for foreign reviews before watching a film. Now, being among the first in the world to see the latest Spider-Man is something fans are truly excited about." Data showed that midnight screenings launched simultaneously in over 100 cities across China, attracting more than 430,000 moviegoers and grossing over 27 million yuan, breaking the five‑year record for midnight screenings of any film in the country. Multiple cinemas in Chongqing organized midnight previews and fan groups on July 29 to meet the eager expectations of local audiences.
Jackie Chan's Stunt Team Crafts Action Sequences
Another major highlight: Jackie Chan's stunt team handled the action choreography throughout the film, integrating Chinese martial arts logic into Spider-Man's combat system. From the script stage, the team wove close-quarters, fast-paced strikes into the fabric of the action - webs became tools not just for swinging but also for redirecting force, grappling, and simultaneous offense and defense. Tom Holland trained with the team for three months, honing everything from power generation to landing techniques. Jackie Chan himself visited the London set during production.
Wu Jiadi, marketing director at Emperor Cinemas in Chongqing, noted that the Chinese martial-arts action has been a huge hit with audiences in Chongqing. "Combined with the immense popularity of the Spider-Man IP, ticket purchases have been strong, and pre-sales have been excellent." Emperor Cinemas' Chongqing Xinguangli+ location has been transformed into a themed cinema featuring exclusive Spider-Man décor and collectible merchandise.
Viewers Rave: Highest-Rated Holland Spider-Man Entry
The film scored 7.8 on Douban, the highest rating for any Tom Holland-starring Spider-Man entry. Early audiences praised everything from action design and emotional depth to the coming-of-age theme.

Mr. Zeng, who avoided all spoilers, said excitedly: "The story is very complete. I've witnessed Spider-Man’s growth over all four films, and it's been amazing." He particularly appreciated the "delicate" relationship between Spider-Man and MJ. Mr. Zhang called it "the best Marvel film since Endgame," adding that the fight between Spider-Man and the Hulk alone "made the ticket worth it."
Ms. He was on her second viewing; she had attended the Shanghai premiere the day before. She praised the Jackie Chan-choreographed action, saying one segment "really had that vintage Jackie Chan feel." Ms. Qian, who rushed to the cinema after work, said: "The movie is brilliant, and heroes are ultimately lonely." Ms. Zheng, a longtime Marvel fan, felt this "brand new story" presented a different Spider-Man - one who shows vulnerability, not just responsibility.
Industry Observation: From "Chosen" to "Needed"
Wu Jiadi observed that "audiences today have higher and higher expectations for film quality. Domestic productions are the foundation, but this film’s integration of Eastern martial arts serves as a model for Sino-foreign cinematic collaboration." He noted that Chongqing is positioning itself as a western film hub, with rich local storytelling resources and a mature audience base.
Huang Shiying, head of the Muwei viewing group, said her team's goal is "to give Chinese audiences a sense of ceremony as the 'first in the world' to watch the film." She revealed that Muwei will organize more exclusive screenings of major overseas films, adding: "Both Spider-Man and Zootopia 2 have proven that Chinese audiences genuinely and powerfully demand a ‘global first’ experience."

According to Maoyan data, the film's final total box office is projected to reach $255 million to $265 million. Wu Jiadi is optimistic about the film's long-term performance. From the global advance release to the deep integration of Jackie Chan's martial arts, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is writing a new chapter in Sino-foreign cinematic collaboration.
