Chongqing — Lanterns, music and molten iron fireworks lit up Wanling Ancient Town in Rongchang district of southwest China's Chongqing municipality on Aug. 15 as the 11th Qixi River Lantern Tourism and Culture Festival opened with a mix of traditional customs, cultural performances and nighttime activities. The festival runs through Aug. 19.

Qixi, celebrated on the seventh day of the seventh month of the Chinese lunar calendar, is also known as Chinese Valentine's Day. Traditionally associated with the legend of the Cowherd and Weaver Girl, the festival has also given rise to customs centered on craftsmanship, romance and wishes for happiness.

Wanling Ancient Town has held the festival for 11 consecutive years. This year's program combines traditional Qixi customs, including releasing river lanterns, traditional craft activities and stargazing, with immersive experiences designed to appeal to younger visitors.

An evening concert features traditional-style dance, modern bands and DJs. A music venue in the ancient town also offers an immersive arts experience featuring violin and piano performances, with craft beer and pastries served alongside the music.

One of the highlights is a molten iron fireworks performance staged together with dance. Molten iron is struck into the night sky, sending showers of sparks above the river, while dancers perform on bamboo rafts on the water. Fire, water and movement come together in a striking nighttime scene.

Smaller stages throughout the ancient town feature dancers, a character portraying the poet Li Bai and traditional-style entertainers. Parades, flash acts and audience interactions add to the festive atmosphere.

Visitors can take part in a garden party featuring games and interactive activities such as a chopsticks challenge, reaction games, “Weaver Girl Makeup” and water-transfer painting on lacquer fans. An activity themed around poetry invites visitors to respond to poetry prompts and recite traditional verses.

Qixi-themed decorations and illuminated installations along the streets provide additional attractions and photo opportunities throughout the ancient town.

A riverside food fair features local specialties including Rongchang braised goose and Rongchang liangfen. The festival also showcases intangible cultural heritage products and cultural-creative goods, giving visitors a chance to explore local cuisine and traditional crafts.
