Madrid, Spain - Scholars, political representatives, and publishing professionals from China and Spain gathered in Madrid on September 26 to discuss the global significance of Chinese modernization, using a Spanish-language book series as a platform for academic exchange.

The international symposium, titled "Dialogue Between Chinese and Western Civilizations in the New Era: The Global Significance of Chinese Modernization," was held during the annual meeting of the Communist Party of Spain at the Miguel Ríos Auditorium. The event focused on the Spanish edition of the "Six Perspectives of Chinese Modernization" book series, with participants discussing the theoretical development, practical experience, and global implications of China's modernization path.

The series explains Chinese modernization from six perspectives: worldview, values, historical perspective, civilization perspective, democracy perspective, and ecological perspective.

The Spanish edition was jointly translated and reviewed by Chinese and Spanish experts. According to the organizers, the translation process aimed to maintain the accuracy of the theoretical content while adapting expressions to Spanish cultural contexts and reading habits.

The series has also been distributed through the academic network of the Latin American Council of Social Sciences, which covers 56 countries and 961 research centers, reaching about 300,000 subscribers.

The Spanish edition had previously been presented at the Guadalajara International Book Fair in Mexico, and a Portuguese-language copyright agreement was signed with a Brazilian publishing institution.

The Madrid symposium marked the entry of the series into Spanish-speaking Europe, extending discussions on Chinese modernization to a wider European audience.

During the event, Yu Haiqing, Vice President of the Academy of Marxism of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, delivered a keynote speech. Chinese and Spanish scholars exchanged views on the contemporary meaning of Chinese modernization, its global relevance and the diversity of modernization paths.

Yu said he hoped China and Spain could further deepen dialogue and cooperation in areas including Marxist party development and socialist theoretical innovation.

At the symposium, Chongqing's Banan District was introduced as a local example of Chinese modernization practices.

Lu Duoxiang, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Banan District Committee and head of its Publicity Department, shared the district's experiences in areas including grassroots governance, urban-rural integration and high-quality development.

The case study highlighted how local practices contribute to broader discussions on modernization by showing how development strategies are implemented at the community level.

Alongside the academic discussions, the "2026 Land-Sea Reading · Chongqing Cultural Interactive Exhibition" presented Chongqing's cultural resources and publishing achievements through displays of images, physical exhibits and interactive experiences.

In June 2026, the International Symposium on the Global Significance of Chinese Modernization was held in Chongqing, bringing together 200 Chinese and international participants from 11 countries. The event launched the 2026 key research topic on "The Global Significance of Chinese Modernization."

The Madrid symposium continued that discussion in the European Spanish-speaking region, focusing on how Chinese modernization can be understood through academic dialogue and cultural exchange.

Through publishing and international cooperation, organizers said the initiative aims to promote exchanges between Chinese and Western civilizations and provide new platforms for discussions on modernization experiences.
