40% of Chongqing Urban Household Waste Could be Recycled in 2022

By JAMES ALEXANDER|Jan 21,2022

Chongqing- According to the 2022 work report released by Chongqing Municipal People's Government, achievements gained in smart urban management and 'streetside' public services should be adopted as standard mechanisms, thus further improving the management capability of districts and counties.

Renovation projects in old residential areas should be carried out to improve the living environment in small towns, while the practice of household waste classification should be extended to all towns and sub-districts.

"This year, we shall invest all efforts into boosting reform and innovation in urban management, which will make Chongqing a more attractive and refined city," commented Xie Liguo, Secretary of Leading Party Members' Group and Director of Chongqing Urban Management Bureau.

Since the model of the public service known as 'streetside offices' was launched in 2018, when Chen Min'er, Secretary of the CPC Chongqing Municipal Committee, instructed that urban management should become more accessible, over 1.7 million issues have been identified and rectified.

This innovative model has covered all sub-districts, and designated towns as of December 2021, and nearly 1.5 million people assigned to this task have achieved an overall rectification count of 99.36%.

In the year 2022, Chongqing Urban Management Bureau aims to develop the streetside office model into a standardized long-term mechanism, promoting urban management through collaboration, participation, and common interest.

'Small gestures make a world of difference'

As part of the government work report, Xie Liguo explained that most old residential communities face the issue of limited space in urban renewal, which means that the correct starting points need to be identified first. "The renovation of old residential areas must begin with small actions to improve the lives of citizens," Xie commented.

For example, the balconies and rooftops of old residential buildings can be used to create three-dimensional green spaces, increasing the overall green coverage rate and beautifying the local environment for residents.

Moreover, the Chongqing Urban Management Bureau will provide an extra 10,000 parking spaces in the four target areas of old residential communities, commercial districts, factory areas, and sub-districts to resolve the difficulties local people experience when parking their vehicles.

Waste classification improves city environment

Built-up areas that connect the main city with rural towns have been identified as a weak point in coordinated development. In response, the Chongqing Urban Management Bureau will promote household waste classification in 2022 for all city-wide towns and sub-districts while ensuring that support mechanisms are in place for equipment, facilities, publicity, and management.

Last year, 38.7% of the household waste in the Chongqing Urban Area was recycled, and this figure is projected to rise above 40% in the year 2022.
