Chongqing - Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Myanmar's Foreign Minister U Wunna Maung Lwin in Tunxi in eastern China's Anhui Province on April 1 and jointly inaugurated the Consulate General of Myanmar in Chongqing.

According to the Foreign Affairs Office of Chongqing Municipal People's Government, the consular districts of the Consulate General of Myanmar are Chongqing Municipality, Sichuan Province, and Hubei Province. The Chongqing government will participate in the inauguration ceremony of the Consulate General of Myanmar.

Recent exchanges between Chongqing and Myanmar

Chongqing has seen growing economic and trade cooperation with Myanmar in recent years.

On September 28, 2020, Myanmar Ambassador to China U Myo Thant Pe visited Chongqing to learn Chongqing's advantages in various aspects. This move has paved the road to deeper cooperation and exchange between Chongqing and Myanmar in economies, trade, logistics, humanities, tourism, and education.

In 2020, the first Legal Practice Guide for Foreign Investment in Myanmar of China-Myanmar cooperation was released in Chongqing. It covers the legal system of investment access, land, taxation, customs, foreign exchange control, labor, and employment. Ang it makes clear about investment dispute settlement mechanism related to foreign investment in Myanmar. This legal guide gives Chinese investors a clear understanding and legal basis for investment in Myanmar.

The China-Myanmar Economic Cooperation and Development Promotion Association has been preparing to open an office in Chongqing. It is understood that the office will be located in Chongqing Bishan District. The office is expected to provide a market-oriented platform for exchanges and cooperation between Chongqing and Myanmar and hold regular exchanges and promotion meetings.

In addition, Myanmar is also planning to set up a Myanmar Promotion Center in Chongqing. By building a platform for direct communication between Chongqing and Myanmar, the center aims to showcase Myanmar's geography and history, agriculture, tourism, culture and education, and other aspects.

It will also set up a  Myanmar commodities exhibition area to share its customs and specialties with Chongqing residents. The center will also provide business consultation and services for enterprises and individuals to invest in Myanmar.
