In this episode, "China's Luxury Malls," we explore the up-and-coming consumption center city Chongqing. As the focus of development in western China, Chongqing has benefited from generous government funding. For the luxury shopper or frequent shopaholics, there is cause for celebration as a shiny new mall is born monthly in Chongqing. New malls bring more foreign brands to Chongqing, which was previously sheltered from outside fashion influences.
In Chongqing, business centers are more dispersed since people like to shop in large malls closer to home. Chongqing boasts the most significant number of shopping malls nationwide, nearly 250 large shopping centers, with a total volume of more than 21 million square meters have been built in the metropolis. There are over 60 scheduled to open every year, far ahead of other cities.
On a local shopping BBS, the most popular malls in Chongqing are The Ring Mall, Raffles City, Paradise Walk, Shin Kong Place, The Mix, Aegean Place, etc.
In China, consumption contributes more than 50% to national GDP growth. On July 19, 2021, China's Ministry of Commerce announced that Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Tianjin, and Chongqing have finally been selected as international consumption center cities. It is no surprise that Chongqing emerged from more than 20 candidates. The total retail sales of consumer goods in Chongqing rank third in China after Shanghai and Beijing, thanks to the vibrant consumption atmosphere.
Everybody is looking forward to this opportunity to bring more advantages to the development of the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle and further enhance Chongqing's international competitiveness.
