Chongqing to Achieve Higher Scientific Literacy than National Average by 2025

By ZHAN CHEN|May 08,2023

Chongqing - Southwest China's Chongqing Municipality aims to achieve higher scientific literacy than the national average by 2025, according to the city's new plan for science and technology popularization.

Scientific literacy refers to the understanding of scientific concepts and processes, as well as the ability to apply them in analyzing and solving real-life, practical issues. It encompasses scientific knowledge and the scientific framework by which people make decisions based on facts, research, and expertise. Consequently, as reported by China Daily, scientific literacy is a crucial component of a population's overall ability.

By 2035, the proportion of scientifically literate citizens in Chongqing will be at the forefront of the country. The city's popular science services and the soft power of its science and culture will be significantly enhanced.

Improving scientific literacy is not only an intrinsic requirement for constructing an innovation-driven country but also a foundational project for creating an innovative environment and cultivating creative talent, according to a journal from Science Bulletin.

A more scientifically literate population tends to help democratic societies make prudent and equitable decisions about policy issues that involve science.

Addressing the current shortcomings and bottlenecks of Chongqing's science popularization efforts, the plan focuses on nine actions, including enhancing the capacity for science popularization and infrastructure, strengthening the talent pool for science popularization, and more.

The plan proposes to create a favorable atmosphere for science popularization through scientific and technological innovation, particularly in ethnic and underdeveloped areas, while promoting the integration of science popularization into lifelong learning systems.

By adjusting its security system, Chongqing aims to strengthen funding, incentives, and evaluation of science popularization efforts, striving for a diversified investment mechanism and developing more educational bases for science popularization.
