By ZHAN CHEN|May 19,2023

Chongqing - Shen Bin, vice president of the Western China Science City Innovation Center of Intelligent and Connected Vehicles (WICV), shared the center's practices for Chongqing's endeavors to build a world-class industrial cluster of ICVs and NEVs at the "Invest in China" Western Region Special Promotion Event, a signature event of the Fifth Western China International Fair for Investment and Trade (WCIFIT), in Chongqing on May 18.

The Western (Chongqing) Science City, as Chongqing's leading platform for scientific and technological innovation, has gathered a group of industry-leading enterprises and projects aiming to create competitive industry chains of intelligent connected vehicles (ICVs) and new energy vehicles (NEVs).

According to the plan, Chongqing's ICV and NEV output will account for over 10% of China's production in three years. Chongqing expects to nurture one or two globally renowned intelligent connected vehicles and new energy vehicle brands by 2030.

Cloud-based control infrastructure to support ICVs

As the Chinese solution for ICVs proposed, WICV tried to integrate cars, roads, and the cloud. "We developed a cloud-based control infrastructure to support core vehicle-to-everything (V2X) scene applications and engaged in in-depth technical collaboration with leading enterprises and institutions in the industry," said Shen.

"We collaborate with key corporate institutions to incubate nine upstream and downstream companies in crucial areas related to vehicle applications and services," added Shen.

Meanwhile, WICV has established an ICV laboratory to drive technological iteration and industry development. Building the bridge between academia, industry, and research has also shown a comprehensive talent cultivation system supported by professional funds.

"WICV is committed to promoting the Chinese solution for ICVs by assuming roles such as an emerging industry cultivator, industry development promoter, enterprise research and development collaborator, and regional development service provider," said Shen.

It has made significant progress in leveraging high-end think tanks, providing policy recommendations, participating in major projects, and constructing a first-class industrial development ecosystem.

Self-developed roadside edge computing devices

As a new research and development (R&D) institution focusing on ICVs, WICV was selected as the first project to be showcased in the automotive manufacturing industry session at the "Invest in China" Western Region Special Promotion Event.

Shen elaborated on WICV's advantages in leading and supporting industrial development, core technology R&D, rapid industrialization, and new industry services.

For example, WICV's self-developed roadside edge computing devices, based on domestically produced high-performance chips, are compatible with various roadside devices.

They can construct a perception system for roads, enabling multi-dimensional, multi-source, and holistic perception of road traffic. They can provide services such as roadside data aggregation, intelligent roadside perception, and intelligent roadside warnings.
