Tesla's Adjusting Energy Recovery is Effective for Chongqing's Unique Topography | Insights

By ZHAN CHEN|Jun 02,2023

Chongqing - "Chongqing's unique topography, characterized by its mountainous landscape, is considered particularly suitable for Tesla vehicles," said Allen Sun, regional general manager of Tesla.

Sun responsible for western China explained that Tesla's energy recovery function is effective when driving uphill and allows energy regeneration when going downhill.

With the recent over-the-air (OTA) updates several days ago, including the return of the user kinetic energy recovery strength adjustable features, Tesla offers energy recovery braking improvements, making it an excellent driving choice for a location like Chongqing, according to Sun.

Sun also compared Chongqing to Hong Kong due to the similarities in mountainous terrain. "We see remarkable success in the Hong Kong market, with approximately one out of every three cars sold being Tesla," he said. "We hope one day Chongqing could achieve a similar feat as it is regarded as a highly suitable product for the city."

Contributing sustainable growth of the local automotive ecosystem

Tesla has rapidly expanded in the Chongqing market since the first store was established in 2018. Currently, Chongqing has 11 stores, six service centers, one delivery center, and two directly-operated body spray centers.

Tesla's expansion reflects the increasing demand for Tesla vehicles and its commitment to offering convenient sales, service, and maintenance facilities for its customers in Chongqing.

This May, Chongqing's car ownership exceeded 5.64 million, ranking it the third-highest nationwide, while the new energy vehicle sales saw compelling growth.

This significant number figure highlights the city's robust automotive industry and growing demand for transportation options. Chongqing's favorable conditions make it an ideal location for advancing the new energy vehicle sector, from supportive government policies to expanding infrastructure.

"Not only bearing the whole Chongqing area, but some Tesla centers also reach surrounding cities in Sichuan and Hubei provinces to serve our clients better," said Sun.

"Chongqing offers vast opportunities for the new energy vehicles development," he added. "We look forward to fostering collaboration with the local market and contributing to the sustainable growth of Chongqing's automotive ecosystem."

Tesla's ambition to expand its business in China

Tesla CEO Elon Musk kicked off a visit to China with a meeting with the country's foreign minister Qin Gang in Beijing on May 29, marking his return to the electric carmaker's largest production hub after three years.

The United States and China share intertwined and inseparable interests, Musk said, adding that Tesla opposes decoupling and is willing to continue to expand its business in China and share the country's development opportunities.

Tesla has been actively involved in the Chinese market for several years. The Gigafactory Shanghai is the representative case of Tesla's first wholly-owned foreign manufacturing facility. It has played a crucial role in helping Tesla lower production costs, localize production, and improve supply chain efficiency for the Chinese market.

However, it's important to note that the Chinese market for energy vehicles is highly competitive, with numerous domestic automakers and foreign companies vying for market share.

"Product competitiveness is always the key, such as our impressive range of services and extensive charging infrastructure," said Sun. Moving forward, Tesla will collaborate with Chinese companies on battery technology, autonomous driving, and other areas, aiming to shape the future of sustainable transportation in China and beyond.
