The exhibition "Crafts First: Exhibition of Cultural Heritage Conservation Technology and Equipment Application" brought together 64 sets of cultural heritage conservation technology equipment and systems jointly developed by nearly a hundred cultural and historical institutions, research institutes, and high-tech enterprises across the country.

The public can visit it by appointment for free.

Comprehensive technology safeguards cultural relics

The ancient city ruins of Loulan, dating back to the Han and Jin dynasties, cover a vast area and are located in a remote region. How can they be managed safely and effectively?

Currently, the "sky, space, and ground" collaborative sensing system deployed in Loulan has played a significant role. In this exhibition, a 30-kilogram standardized micro-nano satellite takes center stage in the exhibition hall. This satellite can achieve visible light resolution better than 1.0 meters, multispectral resolution better than 4.0 meters, and a swath width better than 15 kilometers.

In daily observations, a network of four satellites can increase the temporal resolution of observations in key areas to seven days. In other words, the satellite conducts observations of the same location every week.

Showcasing "national treasure" model equipment cluster

Deep-sea archaeology is at the forefront of underwater archaeological research worldwide. In the exhibition's underwater archaeology zone, models of "national treasure" equipment clusters, including research vessels, submersibles, and underwater vehicles, take the spotlight.

Among them, the "Deep-Sea Warrior" manned submersible attracts many visitors. This submersible can carry three people simultaneously for underwater operations and has the capability for continuous and night-time dives.

It also represents China's ability to develop and manufacture deep-sea manned submersibles independently. Since its deployment in 2017, it has completed 577 dives, reaching an internationally advanced level in submersible operation and maintenance.

For example, the discovery of a large ancient sunken shipwreck in the South China Sea was the first time China used archaeological theories, technologies, and methods, along with deep-sea technology equipment, to investigate ancient shipwrecks located at depths of over a kilometer.

High-tech solutions for preserving murals

Murals in Dunhuang's Mogao Caves have weathered the centuries and been exposed to various natural damages. In recent years, China has made significant progress in key technologies and specialized equipment for preserving cave temple cultural relics.

The exhibition showcases preventive monitoring and warning platforms, digital collection systems for murals and colored sculptures, quantified monitoring systems for cultural relics' physical conditions, and intelligent mobile electron beam irradiation sterilization equipment.

For example, the device can move in all directions within the narrow spaces of a tomb chamber. It can accurately locate the murals needing sterilization, automatically avoid obstacles, and ensure safety and reliability, achieving irradiation sterilization of tomb chamber murals.

Serious water damage has affected the Dazu Rock Carvings, and the exhibition drew wide attention to the sandstone cave rock mass grouting system for humid environments.

Currently, inorganic grouting materials compatible with cave rock mass, friendly to cultural relics, durable, and capable of effective grouting have been developed. The mechanism of inorganic material migration, water absorption, deposition filling, and solidification has been clarified, forming an integrated solution for grouting cracks in humid sandstone cave rock masses.

Immersive experiences bring cultural relics to life

In addition, the cultural heritage exhibition has set up several interactive areas where visitors can experience and feel the stories and culture behind the artifacts in various ways. Visitors can view 3D imaging of exhibits on OLED multimedia interactive display cases through touch interaction and closely examine time traces on cultural relics.

In the "Traveling Through 'A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains'" section, a multi-sensory digital art space transforms the painting into a "Dynamic Landscapes" experience through holographic projection, virtual reality, and special effects technology. It offers visual astonishment and interactive fragrances, immersing visitors in the grandeur of that flourishing era.

Visitors can also experience the world's first "Trans-temporal Interactive Museum" – the Digital Cave of Scriptures. By recreating the storage of over 60,000 precious ancient scriptures a century ago, visitors can "travel through" the late Tang, Northern Song, and late Qing periods, actively participating in the history of the cave of scriptures.

Visitors can use naked-eye 3D vision and other technological equipment to enter the world of ancient palace architecture and cultural relics, appreciating traditional patterns' beauty and exploring their cultural symbolism.
