Chongqing—2024 marks the 70th founding anniversary of the National People's Congress. On October 9, 30 foreign nationals in Chongqing embarked on a journey to explore key locations and gain insight into China's whole-process people's democracy.
The tour started at the Chongqing Municipal People's Congress, where participants learned about municipal lawmaking. Next, at Shijingpo Sub-district, they saw how citizens engage with deputies. The tour ended at Chongqing Sichuan Opera Theatre, highlighting local cultural preservation efforts.
"One of the most fascinating aspects was seeing how the public can offer suggestions, which can reach the National People's Congress and be taken into account," said Fabio Schina, Consul General of Italy in Chongqing.
As a foreign representative, Schina showed keen interest in how Chongqing and the Municipal People's Congress support foreign investment and enhance bilateral cooperation.
Julio Cruz, Chongqing Chapter President of the Mexican Chamber of Commerce in China, noted similarities between the democratic systems of China and Mexico. "I'm glad to see that both countries emphasize democracy and that their leaders truly care about the people," he said, adding that the visit gave him a strong impression of China's governance from the grassroots up.
Nduwimana Celestin, an international student from Rwanda at Chongqing University, noted the significant involvement of citizens in China's political system. "Despite the large population, China ensures that everyone has a role in the lawmaking process. It's truly incredible," he said.
This event, titled "Field Visit by Foreign Nationals to Chongqing People's Congress," was the first of its kind, organized by the Standing Committee of the Chongqing People's Congress. The initiative aims to expand foreign exchanges and help more people understand Chongqing's approach to whole-process people’s democracy.
