This year's symposium is especially significant as it marks the 25th anniversary of the Dazu Rock Carvings being inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The event features five thematic discussions, ranging from comparative studies of rock-carving traditions to innovative applications of digital technology in cultural heritage preservation. Scholars presented over 110 papers, showcasing new research on topics such as the role of the carvings in Buddhist rituals, architectural conservation, and cutting-edge methods in digital restoration.

Luo Xiaochun, deputy secretary of the Chongqing Dazu District Committee of the Communist Party of China, highlighted the international dimension of Dazu's preservation efforts. "We make a global call to recruit 1,007 cultural preservers for our Dazu Rock Carvings, inspired by the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva's 1,007 hands. We hope this international force can help pass Dazu Rock Carvings to the next millennium," Luo said, underscoring the commitment to global cooperation.

One of the standout participants, Mohammad Nasim Khan, a professor at the World Art History Institute (WAI) and Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), emphasized the necessity of intercultural collaboration in preserving heritage. "You can't work in isolation. This conference also has scholars studying other subjects. You need to open up to other people and learn from them. And yes, Dazu Rock Carvings belong to all human beings. Art like it is a language that communicates across cultures," Khan remarked.

The symposium also celebrated recent milestones the Academy of Dazu Rock Carvings achieved. Highlights include the publication of a comprehensive 11-volume archaeological report, the creation of a digital museum, and the debut of high-definition films showcasing the carvings. In addition, restoration projects such as the Thousand-Hand Avalokitesvara sculpture have gained recognition as exemplary cultural preservation efforts.
