Chongqing's Pioneering Architect: Bringing Culture to Life Through Design | Realpreneur Tales

By ZHAN CHENYINGZHU CHEN|Apr 02,2025

Chongqing – Li Weitao, founder and design director of We Live Architect, returned to Chongqing after studying at the Bartlett School of Architecture at University College London. He has since led several high-profile projects in the city.

Among his most influential works are the Joybo Farm and the Houbao urban renewal project, both of which earned recognition, including a shortlist nomination at the World Architecture Festival. As an architect deeply rooted in Chongqing, Li has focused on revitalizing rural and urban areas, using innovative design to highlight local culture through architecture.

"The original concept of Joybo Farm was to create a 'countryside clubhouse' to reconnect people with nature," Li told Bridging News. "It's a rural space, but we aim to introduce a modern, fashionable lifestyle for young urbanites, encouraging them to reconnect with nature and the countryside."

Li explained how the Joybo Farm project included a museum, which is unusual for a tourist site in the countryside. "We wanted to bring contemporary and land art into the rural environment. In the West, this is common, but it's not something you see often in China," he noted. "The idea of a museum in the countryside is about introducing cultural events, activities, and exhibitions that are not typically associated with the area."

After completing this rural project, Li shifted his focus to urban development, particularly the regeneration of the Houbao old community. "When we regenerate an area like this, the most important thing is to change the demographic by bringing in younger people. This can transform the energy of the place," Li explained.

He described the urban renewal strategy as an urban plug-in, where small blocks are added to underutilized parts of the city, forgotten corners, and parks beneath urban corridors. "We bring in interesting shops like coffee shops, design studios, and even bicycle shops. These attractions help draw different kinds of people to the area," Li added.

Li also emphasized the importance of local culture in shaping a community. "The real stories of people are the culture of the community," he said. "Everything we design is meant to invite people in, to hear their stories and share them with others. This is the essence of local culture."

Li said, "We aim to help people understand our design concepts and proposals by inviting them to experience our projects firsthand. We want them to come, stay, and enjoy the space." He believes that's the best way to connect with architecture.
