Chongqing –The 2025 Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Film Festival is in full swing in the vibrant city of Chongqing, bringing together actors, musicians, directors, and producers from 10 member states for a dynamic celebration of cinema and cross-cultural exchange.
Amid the buzz of the festival, international stars have been effusive in their praise for Chongqing’s unique charm. Actor Hu Jun joked, “The food in Chongqing impressed me a lot. Once I came to Chongqing, I didn’t want to lose weight anymore.” Fellow actor Ding Guansen echoed the sentiment, describing Chongqing as “a place worth visiting whenever you have free time,” and highlighting its laid-back atmosphere, delicious cuisine, and striking scenery. Yu Zhou, President of Light Chaser Animation, emphasized the city’s growing role in film production: “Chongqing is also a cinematic city. Many movies are filmed here,” he said, citing Cats and Peachtopia as an example.
A key highlight of the festival is the presence of internationally acclaimed actress Zhang Ziyi, who serves as the festival’s ambassador. Speaking at the event, Zhang reflected on her long-standing connection with Yongchuan, where she filmed House of Flying Daggers 21 years ago. She noted the district’s transformation into “the only leading high-tech film studio in western China and a national pioneer.”
“The Chinese film industry is open and kind. We invite global friends to share in this achievement,” Zhang said, capturing the inclusive ethos of the event. “Thanks to movies for letting us meet here, cross mountains and seas. Thanks to the SCO Film Festival for letting us witness the power of art without borders.”
That theme—of art transcending boundaries—has echoed throughout the festival. Luo Wei, a Steinway Artist and concert pianist who performed The Yellow River in collaboration with a Kazakhstani pianist, emphasized music’s universal resonance: “I think music is the most direct art form. It can transcend borders, races, and ages across time.”
This year’s edition marks the 120th anniversary of Chinese cinema and China’s return as host of the SCO Film Festival after a seven-year hiatus. Over five days, 20 films will compete for top honors in categories including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Actor.
The Belarusian delegation, one of many international participants, praised the festival as “an exceptional opportunity for cultural exchange,” and “a platform to share stories and values, thus promoting cultural diversity and mutual understanding” among SCO nations.
Running through July 7, the 2025 SCO Film Festival continues to spotlight the unifying power of film, culture, and shared creativity.
