Chongqing - As temperatures soar, Chongqing has opened 40 civil air defense shelters and 146 rail transit station cooling zones, providing popular respite for citizens escaping the sweltering weather. These air-conditioned spaces offer drinking water, seating, heatstroke prevention kits, books, and free Wi-Fi. Visitors gather to chat over tea, praising the centers as ideal community oases.

By 11 a.m., outdoor temperatures neared 40°C (104°F). Stepping into the cooling centers brings instant relief. Mr. Zeng, 64, traveled specifically to this cooling zone and said: "I arrived at 9 a.m.—it’s convenient, cool, with complimentary tea and TV. I visit every few days."
Adjacent to an underground mall, the shelter also attracts shoppers taking breaks. Ms. Xu, 60, entered drenched in sweat, poured herself water, and sighed: "Free tea in perfect coolness—an ideal rest stop."

By 2 p.m., the center buzzed with activity. Dozens filled the tunnels—sipping tea, playing cards, or relaxing. Mr. Zhang, over 60, observed: "It’s cool inside but fiery at the entrance. Locals love gathering here for cards and tea. Once in, you’ll linger."

Beyond civil defense shelters, since July 4, Chongqing Rail Transit has opened 146 station cooling zones—six more than in 2024. These facilities feature orderly seating, wall-mounted heat safety tips, and water dispensers, maintaining naturally cool environments.
While outdoors exceeded 40°C (104°F), cooling zones stayed near 20°C (68°F). "All ages enjoy this cool haven—seniors, youth, and children sing and dance here," a visitor shared.

At Daping Station of Line 2, a citizen was reading beside his dog. "These spaces help beat the heat while saving electricity," he noted, highlighting their role in easing grid pressure. Nearby at Zengjiayan Station, groups played chess and cards, savoring leisurely hours.
