Yue-Sai Kan: A Bridge Across Cultures Mastering Social Media

By XUELIN MUXINGCHEN YUE|Dec 11,2025

Chongqing — Yue-Sai Kan is widely celebrated for her pioneering role in building cultural bridges between China and the United States. In the 1970s, her groundbreaking program Looking East became the first of its kind in the U.S. to introduce Asian cultures—including China—to American audiences. In the following decade, at the invitation of CCTV, she created and hosted China’s first travel program, One World, offering millions of Chinese viewers their earliest window to the broader world. Now, decades later, Yue-Sai Kan returns with a new iteration of One World—this time on social media.

In this new program, Chongqing stands out as one of the key destinations she is showcasing to global viewers. During her filming trip to the city, iChongqing had the opportunity to conduct an exclusive interview with her. Yue-Sai shared her insights on the shift from traditional broadcast programming to social media–driven content—reflecting on the differences, challenges, and opportunities it brings—as well as her observations on China’s remarkable transformation in recent decades, particularly in the empowerment and advancement of Chinese women.
