Inland No More: Southwest China Expands Global Trade via EVs, Motorcycles, Bonded Exports, Logistics

By RAN ZHENGHUXIN LUO|May 02,2026

Chongqing - In Southwest China's Chongqing municipality, districts are leveraging electric vehicle manufacturing, bonded-area exports, motorcycle production, aviation maintenance, and logistics platforms to connect inland industries with overseas markets.

During an April visit by the "Vibrant Chongqing" media group, officials and company executives in Tongliang, Yongchuan, Chongqing High-tech Industrial Development Zone, and Shapingba described how manufacturing projects are being integrated with supply-chain services, bonded logistics, and international transport networks.

Leading motorcycle maker drives the growth of supplier clusters

In Tongliang District, AIMA E-Bike has become a leading example. The company established operations in Tongliang High-tech Zone in July 2021, with a total investment of 2 billion yuan (about 292 million U.S. dollars). Its production base includes frame welding, coating, injection molding, and final assembly.

On its smart assembly lines, robotic arms perform welding and assembly, AGV unmanned vehicles move materials between workstations, and a new smart connected electric vehicle rolls off the line every 30 seconds.

"We have planned 16 final assembly lines, and once full production is reached, annual capacity is expected to reach five million units," said Song Xianbo, deputy general manager of Chongqing Aima Vehicle Technology Co.

Song said the company produced 1.5 million vehicles in 2025, with an output value of about 12 billion yuan. Its products are sold across domestic markets, including Yunnan, Guizhou, Chongqing, Guangxi, Hunan, and Hubei, and exported to Europe, Southeast Asia, and the Americas.

Aima’s development has also helped drive the formation of a local supplier cluster. Tongliang has attracted more than 20 supporting companies, with products now spanning 16 categories, including smart cabins and transmission systems. A total of 25 core components are supplied locally, with a local matching rate exceeding 80%.

In 2025, the smart connected electric vehicle industry in Tongliang generated 5.5 billion yuan in output value, up 22.3% year-on-year, according to the district.

The district said it has issued compliance guidelines for electric bicycle manufacturers, covering market access, product quality, and certification. It has also helped more than 20 companies secure over 150 million yuan in treasury bond funding for equipment upgrades and technological transformation.

Bonded zones and cross-border routes support auto and machinery exports

In Yongchuan, the focus is on bonded-area exports. Bridging News visited Yongchuan Comprehensive Bonded Zone, Toscana (Chongqing) Supply Chain Co., and Great Wall Motor's Chongqing KD factory.

KD, or knock-down production, refers to exporting vehicle parts in sets for assembly overseas. The Great Wall factory is China's first KD factory located inside a comprehensive bonded zone, using a customs declaration model for complete sets of auto parts to improve clearance and export efficiency.

The factory has a total investment of about 10 million yuan and covers 12,000 square meters. It is positioned as a KD packaging and operation center for Southwest China, with current export models including the Tank 300, GWM POER, and Haval H9. After full production is reached, it is expected to ship 30,000 KD units annually, handle 13,500 containers, and generate an annual output value of 1 billion yuan.

"According to the plan, by the end of 2026, the factory's cumulative exports will exceed 50,000 units or sets, annual export trade volume will reach 3 billion yuan, and container throughput capacity will exceed 10,000 TEUs," said Zhao Chunxi, workshop director of Great Wall Motor's Chongqing KD factory. Zhao said the plant would leverage Yongchuan’s location and the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor (ILSTC) to promote the export of GWM's high-end vehicles.

Logistics services are also being expanded across Chongqing’s industrial zones. Chongqing's first off-airport cargo terminal has begun trial operation in Xiyong Comprehensive Bonded Zone. With 4,840 square meters of warehouse space and an annual mail and cargo handling capacity of 50,000 tons, the terminal can handle international goods, including high-end industrial products and cross-border e-commerce cargo.

The terminal can reduce logistics costs for international outbound cargo by more than 20%, improve handling efficiency by 20%, and raise inbound handling efficiency by 30%.

The Chongqing Xiyong-ASEAN cross-border route has also opened, using Xiyong Comprehensive Bonded Zone as a cargo distribution point and connecting with border resources in Guangxi and Vietnam. Li Jun, deputy general manager of Chongqing Beitou Land Port Logistics Technology Co., said the route had completed about 650 truck trips with a cargo value of around 1.05 billion yuan. "By the end of this year, we expect to reach 1,500 trips, with a cargo value of about 3 billion yuan," Li said.

Digital Manufacturing and logistics hubs strengthen Chongqing's global links

In Chongqing High-tech Industrial Development Zone, motorcycle and new energy vehicle companies are building digital production systems. At Loncin Motor, the company has developed a high-end motorcycle "industrial brain," a data platform covering smart manufacturing, smart purchasing, and smart applications.

Cheng Yi, deputy head of the industrial internet department at Loncin's digital intelligence center, said the system has connected more than 700 core supply-chain companies, nearly 1,700 dealer outlets, and more than 300,000 smart connected motorcycles.

Cheng said the platform supports product research and marketing through sales data and provides real-time emergency response services through vehicle network data, fall-detection algorithms, and a 24-hour call center.

Loncin said it achieved 19.1 billion yuan in revenue in 2025, up 13.75%. Annual motorcycle output and sales exceed 1.8 million units, engine output and sales exceed 3.3 million units, and general machinery output and sales exceed 4.4 million units.

Another motorcycle maker, Chongqing Shineray Motorcycle Co., has used racing to support brand development. Nie Jianwei, head of the company's brand marketing department, said Shineray began representing China in the Motocross World Championship in 2004 and has hosted the Shineray Cup motocross race since 2007.

"We have introduced champion riders into research and development and established a mechanism of race-track verification, engineering improvement, and mass-production implementation," Nie said. He said the company's self-owned brand ratio for exports is close to 60% overall and nearly 100% in some South American markets.

Yang Miuer, an enterprise service specialist with Xiyong Industrial Investment Group's Microelectronics Park company, said the zone has gathered whole-vehicle companies including Changan Kuayue, Loncin, and Shineray, along with more than 100 component suppliers such as Jinkang Power and Konghui Technology. Yang said more than 100 research platforms are being cultivated to support a "vehicle, road, cloud, network, and map" industrial layout.

Seres Power, another company visited in the high-tech zone, operates the factory for core new energy vehicle components, including electric drives, electric controls, generators, and range-extender assemblies. The factory was recognized in 2024 as a Chongqing AI-enabled demonstration future factory.

In Shapingba District, the logistics platform is centered on Chongqing International Logistics Hub Park and Tuanjiecun railway station. Zhang Shaolin, deputy head of the park company's foreign affairs department, said the park has built a modern logistics system combining channels, hubs, and networks. "It now connects to 584 ports in 127 countries," Zhang said.

By 2025, the park had operated 31,300 trains with a cargo value of 689.9 billion yuan, accounting for 71.4% and 83.8% of Chongqing's totals, respectively.

Shapingba is also using legal and bonded platforms to support cross-border business. Xie Kunhong, deputy head of the district justice bureau, said 47 legal and business institutions had entered the ILSTC Legal Services Area, including 16 from overseas. He said nearly 30,000 foreign-related notarization cases were handled in 2025.

Nearby, the Chongqing International Railway Port Comprehensive Bonded Zone, which passed formal acceptance in September 2025, focuses on automobiles, pharmaceuticals, intelligent equipment, and cold-chain logistics.

A zone official said it is developing an integrated model that combines international trade corridors, railway ports, and bonded-zone functions. Under the model, customs clearance for goods imported from Southeast Asia can be shortened from 15 days to 30 minutes, while corporate capital turnover can become nearly three times faster.
