Chongqing - The city’s signature cultural brand “A Concert Night in Chongqing” is expanding with a new Friday concert series, set to launch on July 10, at the Changjiahui Plaza along Nanbin Road. The first performance begins at 8 p.m. local time, offering an immersive musical experience against the glittering backdrop of the city’s iconic two‑river, four‑banks skyline.

The new “A Concert Night in Chongqing on Nanbin Road” occupies the same prime vantage point that hosted the Chongqing segment of this year’s CCTV Spring Festival Gala. With the cityscape and starry sky serving as its natural stage, the show blends symphonic, pop, and film music with local folk tunes. Professional musicians will perform alongside amateur artists, reflecting the program’s commitment to broad public participation and the fusion of high art with authentic local culture.

“We want this concert to present a different side of the new Chongqing – its modern energy and distinctive character,” said Liu Guang, president of the Chongqing Opera House and head of the Chongqing Symphony Orchestra.

The Saturday symphony series, which has now run for 28 weeks, has already performed over 130 Chinese and international works and generated more than 60 million online impressions. The new Friday edition builds on that success with a more relaxed and accessible format.

Organizers highlight three key innovations: a professional yet contemporary programme that features both orchestral and electronic music; the subtle integration of local elements such as Sichuan opera, acrobatics, and the Tongliang dragon dance; and an open platform for emerging talent, with dedicated segments for debut performances and amateur showcases.

Looking ahead, “A Concert Night in Chongqing” will evolve into a three‑tiered system: the Saturday symphony for elite international exchanges, the Friday Nanbin Concert for immersive public experiences, and a planned “Grassroots Stage” that will allow any citizen to apply for a performance slot, with standout acts earning a chance to appear on the main Friday stage.
The project also aims to boost tourism and local commerce. It will collaborate with the nearby Changjiahui and Danzishi Old Street shopping districts, hosting a music‑themed market featuring intangible cultural heritage crafts and street performances – creating an integrated “show + night tour + shopping” experience.
“We are committed to quality while maintaining market balance,” said Guan Hong, president of the Chongqing International Culture Association. “We will offer subsidised shows and affordable tickets to ensure broad access, while also inviting corporate partnerships to sustain the programme. Through music, we hope to raise Chongqing’s cultural profile internationally.”
The Friday concerts will include both free and low‑cost tickets, with further details available on official channels. All performances are open to the public and visitors alike.
