Chongqing - This Mid‑Autumn season, Middle‑earth returns to the symphonic stage as the Kazan Chamber Orchestra La Primavera presents The Lord of the Rings Hollywood Film Gala - Mid‑Autumn Concert at Chongqing Grand Theatre on Saturday, September 24, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are priced at RMB 480, 380, 280, 180, and 100.

The program is built around Howard Shore’s music for Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, performed as The Lord of the Rings: Symphonic Poem in Five Movements. Drawn from the three films, the suite revisits the Shire, the Fellowship’s journey to destroy the One Ring, and the alliance of Hobbits, Elves, Men, Dwarves and Rohirrim against Sauron. Shore’s scores—recognized with Academy Awards for The Fellowship of the Ring and The Return of the King, an Academy Award for the song “Into the West,” and multiple Grammy Awards across the trilogy—combine symphonic writing, Celtic color and leitmotif technique to evoke the landscapes and drama of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle‑earth. Selected film themes including “Old Friends” and “Gollum’s Song” are featured within the evening’s LOTR segment, with the five movements tracing the trilogy’s emotional arc from pastoral calm to epic climax.

Beyond Middle‑earth, the concert offers a pan‑cinema encores/program of film and television themes, including Francis Lai’s “Love Story,” Astor Piazzolla’s “Libertango” (associated with The Tango Lesson), Ramin Djawadi’s Game of Thrones main theme, Carlos Gardel’s “Por una cabeza” (Scent of a Woman), Monty Norman’s James Bond Theme (007), Henry Mancini’s “Moon River” (Breakfast at Tiffany’s), Nicola Piovani’s La vita è bella, Ennio Morricone’s “Chi Mai” (The Professional), and Hans Zimmer’s “He’s a Pirate” (Pirates of the Caribbean). The program and order are subject to change at the performers’ discretion.
La Primavera is formally billed by its home organization as the Kazan Chamber Orchestra La Primavera. Founded in 1989 by violinist‑conductor Rustem Abyazov, the ensemble is among Russia’s leading chamber orchestras, with a repertoire of more than 3,000 works spanning Baroque, Classical, Russian and Tatar music, jazz and film arrangements.

The orchestra has appeared at the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall, Rachmaninoff Hall and Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory in Moscow, the Glinka Hall of the St. Petersburg Philharmonia, the Organ Hall of the Perm Philharmonia and the Moscow International House of Music, and has toured Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, France, Greece, Israel, China, South Korea and other countries. Its in‑house festivals include the Abyazov Festival and L’arte del arco (“Art of the Bow”). According to the orchestra’s touring materials, it has collaborated with internationally recognized soloists including Mischa Maisky.
For the Chongqing date, La Primavera performs in a flexible chamber format suited to both Shore’s expansive Middle‑earth writing and the lyrical intimacy of classic screen themes—pairing Mid‑Autumn atmosphere with a Hollywood‑orchestral program.
