Huawei and Seres Seal New Five-Year Pact, Doubling Down on AITO as a Premium Brand

By FENG, XIAOLOU|Oct 03,2026

Chongqing - Huawei and Seres have recommitted to each other for the long haul. On Sep 30, the two companies signed a strategic cooperation upgrade agreement in Shenzhen, launching a fresh five-year partnership that binds the tech giant even more tightly to the Chongqing-based automaker at a moment when their relationship had appeared to be shifting gears.

The ceremony, attended by Huawei consumer chief Yu Chengdong and Seres founder Zhang Xinghai, frames AITO as a maturing brand with more than 1.2 million users. Under the new agreement, the partners will jointly establish a dedicated AITO business team, sharpen the brand's focus on the premium intelligent electric vehicle segment, and move toward an exclusive retail and service model designed to push AITO further upmarket.

The announcement arrives just two weeks after a restructuring that had fueled speculation about a quiet decoupling. Previously, on Sep 15, AITO adopted a revised cooperation model under the Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance (HIMA) framework that handed Seres control over product definition, design, brand marketing, retail channels, and after-sales service. Authorized dealer agreements shifted from Huawei to a Seres affiliate, and the brand began transitioning to a dedicated, exclusive sales network. Huawei retained its technology support role, but the operational center of gravity clearly moved toward Seres.

That shuffle coincided with Seres' uneven financial performance. In the first half of 2026, the automaker's revenue slid 7.87% year-on-year to 57.49 billion yuan (around  $8.57 billion), and it posted a net loss of 1.72 billion yuan (about $256 million). The company attributed the dip to model transitions and temporary spikes in component costs. With AITO having crossed the one-million-vehicle threshold in January, some analysts read the changes as a natural graduation — or as Huawei gradually loosening its grip to focus on newer HIMA partners.
In April 2021, the Seres SF5 model became the first vehicle sold through Huawei's retail network. By December, the AITO brand debuted with the M5. Huawei supplied the smart driving stack, HarmonyOS cockpits, and storefront traffic; Seres handled development, manufacturing, and delivery from its Chongqing factory. The lineup quickly expanded to the M7, M8, and M9. In 2024, Seres sold 426,900 new energy vehicles and swung to a net profit of 5.95 billion yuan ($887.07 million), reversing earlier losses. The partnership also deepened financially: Seres paid 11.5 billion yuan ($1.71 billion) for a 10% stake in Huawei's HIMA entity, Shenzhen Yinwang, and completed the transfer in March 2025.
