A Tale of the Yellow Sea Mudflats

By Discover Yancheng; CGTN|Oct 10,2026

Mudflat Haven, a 12-episode comic drama series, transforms the vast, mysterious Yellow Sea mudflats in eastern China's Jiangsu Province into a wetland popular-science fairy tale for teenagers in China and abroad.

A small bird's first big journey

The story follows Spofie, a spoon-billed sandpiper – one of the world's most endangered birds – on her first solo migration. After a long, weary flight, she finally spots the mudflats of Tiaozini. Will this strange coastal wetland welcome a tiny traveler from afar?

Newly arrived, Spofie treads carefully. On the flats, the tide rises and falls in the blink of an eye; finding food and dodging danger is her first lesson in wetland survival. Then a surging tide throws her into an accidental encounter with the residents. After a nervous first meeting, barriers slowly melt away – and on the mudflat, the seeds of friendship quietly begin to sprout.

Learning to belong

The friends of the mudflat show Spofie the joys of the wetland – chasing games, darting through the reed marshes – and she slowly lets down her guard, feeling the unique vitality of this land. But happy times come with small frictions. A minor misunderstanding arises between Spofie and her companions: how do the creatures of the mudflat resolve conflict and make room for one another?

The answer arrives with a roaring tide. As a sudden trial descends on the wetland, Spofie and her friends look out for each other in the wind and waves, learning what it means to stand together. When calm returns and the flats recover their former life, Spofie is no longer the timid stranger she once was – she has truly become part of the great family of Tiaozini.

Night … and thoughts of home

By day, the mudflat is lively and loud.

But when dusk slowly drapes the land and all things fall quiet, Spofie gazes alone into the twilight, a faint wistfulness stirring in her heart.

Late at night, sitting alone on the mud, the young bird on her first solo migration feels homesick. Quietly, Milu – a Père David's deer who has never once left the wetland – comes to keep her company. Together they speak of distant places and of staying. Because of her, the wetland has a brand-new story.

Alongside Spofie and Milu, the series brings the flats' inhabitants to life one after another: the red-crowned crane, the black-faced spoonbill, the fiddler crab – each episode unlocking one small secret of the wetland.

The promise of return

Autumn quietly dyes the flats, and the signal of migration travels on the wind. Spofie dimly senses that these beautiful days together will, in the end, give way to a moment of parting. As farewell draws nearer, her friends – full of reluctance – treasure every remaining moment with her in Tiaozini.

Farewell arrives as promised. Her strength restored, Spofie is about to set off for distant shores. Her friends call out their parting wishes: no matter how far she flies, this mudflat will always keep a lamp lit, waiting for her to come home. "Goodbye" is not an ending – it is a promise to meet again.
