Made in Chongqing, Ordered Worldwide: How Digital Marketplaces Reshape Manufacturing Exports | eBay Report

By ZHAN CHEN|Oct 31,2026

Chongqing - Manufacturers in Chongqing are using digital marketplaces to reach overseas buyers, test which products attract orders and expand sales beyond China. These platforms offer another way into international markets, where factories have traditionally relied on local distributors or built their own sales networks.

These platforms give Chongqing’s automotive, motorcycle and machinery manufacturers a new outlet for products they already have the capacity to make. Winning an overseas order, however, is just the beginning. The bigger challenge is building a sustainable international business from those initial sales.

Let overseas demand guide the product line

Overseas buyers looking for parts to fit specific vehicles or equipment create opportunities for Chongqing’s manufacturers in cross-border e-commerce. The city’s established automotive and motorcycle parts, machinery and hardware industries provide a strong base for meeting this specialized demand.

As manufacturers seek to meet these overseas needs, Chongqing’s cross-border e-commerce sector is expanding. Imports and exports through these channels reached 36.803 billion yuan (about 5.52 billion U.S. dollars) in 2025, followed by 21.18 billion yuan in the first seven months of 2026, up 5.21% year on year.

By September 2026, the city had more than 20,000 cross-border e-commerce business entities, according to local reports.

The trend is also reflected in eBay's business in the city, a global e-commerce marketplace. Platform data reported in June 2026 showed that sales by Chongqing sellers grew by more than 35% in 2025, while the number of newly onboarded local sellers had nearly tripled since 2024. Automotive and motorcycle parts were among their leading categories.

For Kevin Deng, business development manager at eBay Greater China, cross-border e-commerce appeals to individual sellers because of the reach it offers. An eBay survey Deng cited found that Chinese sellers could reach buyers in more than 60 countries on average through the platform.

That reach would be difficult to replicate through traditional trade alone. Selling in dozens of countries can require separate marketing, distribution and customer-service arrangements. Online marketplaces lower the initial barrier to finding overseas buyers, although sellers must still meet each market's requirements and fulfill their orders reliably.

Automotive parts illustrate how this model can work for Chongqing. Deng described the category as a cornerstone of eBay's business in China. The platform's automotive catalog goes beyond replacement parts, covering motorcycles, complete vehicles in certain markets, and components for aircraft and marine applications.

For local manufacturers, the opportunity is not simply to upload existing products and wait for orders. They should identify where their production capabilities match overseas demand, then use customer responses and sales data to determine which products and markets offer room for growth.

Build a brand buyers come back to

Getting products in front of overseas buyers is only the beginning. For manufacturers, sustainable growth depends on understanding market demand, expanding beyond existing product lines and giving customers reasons to return.

Deng illustrated this approach with brake discs in the U.S. market. To estimate annual online demand, sellers need to consider factors such as the number of vehicles on the road, how often brake discs need replacing, the share of sales handled by the independent aftermarket, the proportion of purchases made online and the average selling price. By working through these factors, manufacturers can estimate market size before deciding which products to sell and how much stock to prepare.

For Chongqing's automotive-parts makers, this means looking beyond what their factories can produce to identify what overseas customers actually need. Sales data, customer feedback, and competitor research can help businesses identify promising products, explore related categories, and make better decisions about product development and inventory.

But a wider product range alone will not build a brand. Accurate technical specifications, reliable quality, timely delivery, and responsive after-sales service matter just as much. For automotive components, compatibility is especially critical: a part that doesn't fit the intended vehicle can lead to costly returns and erode customer trust.

Digital platforms can help sellers reach buyers and observe market demand, but manufacturers must turn those insights into better products and more reliable service. Building a recognizable brand requires sustained investment in product development, quality control and customer relationships, rather than simply adding a name or logo to an exported product.

For Chongqing's manufacturers, the broader challenge is to combine their existing production strengths with a more market-oriented approach. The goal is not just to sell what the factory makes, but to understand what global customers need, develop products accordingly, and earn their business again.

From factory floor to customer support

Even when a product finds demand overseas, cross-border sales bring practical challenges. Different markets have different regulatory requirements, customs procedures and product standards, all of which can affect costs and the time needed to bring goods to customers.

Deng highlighted the changing requirements facing Chinese exporters. For example, the European Union introduced a temporary €3 customs duty on qualifying low-value e-commerce goods from July 1, 2026. A separate €2 handling fee will take effect on November 1 for covered goods entering the EU from outside the bloc.

The measures are distinct, and their application depends on the relevant rules. For sellers operating on narrow margins, additional charges can influence pricing and market selection.

Logistics is another consideration, particularly for an inland manufacturing hub. Chongqing's international connections, including the China-Europe Railway Express and the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor, provide routes to overseas markets. Yet the most suitable shipping solution still depends on the product, destination, delivery expectations, and cost.

For industrial sellers, fulfillment extends beyond getting a parcel out of the warehouse. Bulky components can be expensive to ship, while choosing the wrong product can lead to costly returns. Companies need to plan inventory, provide accurate product information and establish workable arrangements for customer support and after-sales service.

These demands help explain why cross-border e-commerce is becoming more closely linked to industrial supply chains. Chongqing's policy direction has emphasized linking online trade to industrial clusters, including automotive and motorcycle parts, consumer electronics, and general machinery and hardware tools. The objective is to make it easier for manufacturers to connect production capabilities with international demand.

For Chongqing, the next stage is therefore about turning access into staying power. Manufacturing provides the products, international transport links provide routes to market, and digital platforms help businesses find buyers. Whether these advantages translate into lasting growth will depend on manufacturers' ability to understand customers, comply with local requirements, and deliver a reliable experience long after the first sale.
