The dance drama Confucius has been performed in many countries and regions such as the US, Italy, Japan, Australia, and China’s Hong Kong and Taipei, winning a lot of praise at home and abroad. The drama presents the life course of Confucius traveling across all the kingdoms, during which he suffered numerous rebuffs and finally failed to realize his dream.

In the troubled times, fatuous and self-indulgent rulers were obsessed with women, they sought advice from Confucius without implementation, and the crafty, fawning and arbitrary courtiers intrigued against each other. Confucius advised the application of ren (benevolence) and li (ritual) but in vain. Eventually, he was implicated in the court strife and had to flee from calamity. Hungry and cold, he seemed to see the ideal world of universal harmony in the situation fraught with danger.

The war displaced the people. In the dark, the Solitary Orchid was not a self-pitying song anymore, but the singing implied a long way to go. The pursuit of tao is far from ending.
