Tushan Temple

Located at the peak of Tushan Mountain in Nan’an District, Chongqing, Tushan Temple covers over 10,000 square meters. In Chongqing, Tushan Temple is the oldest of its kind.

Though its history is profound, we do not know the specific year of its establishment. It was the memorial temple enshrining Yu the Great and Tushan-shi, his wife, in the Western Han Dynasty (206 B.C.–8 A.D.).

According to historical records, Yu married Tushan-shi (or Lady Tushan), a woman from Tushan Mountain, during his practices in water control. In memory of his dedication, people built the Temple of Yu the Great on that mountain. In the Tang Dynasty, Bai Juyi, a great poet, composed Traveling alone in Tushan Temple. Thus we can see that the name of this temple at that time was “Tushan”.
