2018 Chongqing Mayor’s International Economic Advisory Council

The year 2016 is memorable in the process of Chongqing’s economic development and opening-up. In that year, the annual meeting system of Chongqing Mayor’s International Economic Advisory Council (CMIA) was formally established under the initiative of Gerard Mestrallet, Chairman and CEO of GDF Suez then, bringing more partners to Chongqing.

Every year, 30 to 40 chairmen or presidents of Fortune Global 500 enterprises and world-renowned enterprises will be invited to offer advice and suggestions for Chongqing’s development as advisors of the annual meeting.

During the 13th Annual Meeting of the CMIA, head of Global 500 enterprises and world-renowned enterprises exchanged ideas with Chongqing’s decision-makers of economic and social development, deepening mutual understanding and trust. Besides, the annual meeting attracted more Global 500 enterprises and transnational corporations to join in the city’s quality development.

287 Global 500 enterprises developed businesses in Chongqing

In 1985, QingLing Motors Co., Ltd. was established, which was a significant event in Chongqing’s open economy. It is Chongqing’s first Sino-foreign joint venture company since the reform and opening-up, with the joint capital of QingLing Vehicle Manufacture Company and Isuzu Motors Limited.

Following Isuzu Motors Limited, many other Global 500 enterprises also entered in Chongqing, including Ford Motor Company, General Motors Company, and Hyundai Motor Company. By virtue of these enterprises, Chongqing emerged as one of the four major automobile production bases in China.

The annual meeting system has further promoted communication between Chongqing and these global giants in various industries. As of late 2018, a total of 287 Global 500 enterprises from 19 countries and regions including the US, the UK, France, Germany, and Japan have developed businesses in Chongqing, mainly involving automobile, electronics, finance, and other industries.

Participating enterprises keep increasing investment in Chongqing

It was the third time for Claudio Facchin, Head of Power Systems Division of ASEA Brown Boveri (ABB), to participate in the annual meeting but he has visited the city many times.

He attaches great importance to the annual meeting and the development of ABB in Chongqing. On July 26 this year, ABB signed a contract with Chongqing Municipal People’s Government to build a global intelligent manufacturing base of transformers. The construction of the base will begin in late 2019 and be completed and put into operation in 2022.

ABB Chongqing Transformer Co. Ltd. has participated in many key projects in China, including the Three Gorges Dam project, 2008 Summer Olympic Games, Expo 2010 Shanghai China and several UHV projects in China, including the Changji-Guquan ± 1,100 kV UHV Project with the highest voltage level, the most extensive transmission capacity and the longest transmission distance in the world. Meanwhile, it also exports products to 19 overseas markets, including Singapore, Laos, and Australia.

Besides ABB, quite a few other enterprises that have participated in the annual meeting have also contributed to the economic and social development of Chongqing.

On May 28, Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. signed an investment agreement with Chongqing on Kawasaki 6-axis robot manufacturing and integration project, marking a new stage of cooperation in robotics and industrial automation.

On July 26, Altus Group Limited announced a partnership with Chongqing to co-build a new plant for producing high-end semiconductor packaging support plates for high-performance computing modules.

In the third quarter of this year, the chip packaging project (Phase II Project) in Chongqing of SK Hynix will be put into use, when the Chongqing Corporate will emerge as the world’s most extensive overseas packaging and testing base of SK Hynix.

Giants eye Chongqing’s future potential

Participating enterprises of the annual meeting comprise Global 500 enterprises and transnational corporations. They will invest in a region only after the assessment of its comprehensive strength in various aspects.

Actually, they chose Chongqing because of its current development and future potential to a great extent.

Hannes Androsch, Chairman of the last annual meeting and Chairman of the board of supervisors, Altus Group Limited, is very optimistic about the development of Chongqing in intelligent manufacturing. He believed that Chongqing would become a crucial base for smart manufacturing through building high-end industrial ecological chains, cultivating qualified labor force, and creating a competitive and open investment environment.
