COVID-19 Update: China's Manufacturing Sector Resumes Steady Production

Xinhua reported that China's manufacturing sector has steadily advanced production resumption, with 98.6 percent of major industrial firms nationwide having restarted work as of Saturday, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) said Monday. Around 89.9 percent of employees in industrial companies with annual revenue of more than 20 million yuan (about 2.84 million U.S. dollars) had returned to their posts.

In addition, over 490 medical institutions from 109 countries and regions have applied to join the Global MediXchange for Combating COVID-19 (GMCC) program -- an online platform jointly set up by Jack Ma Foundation and Alibaba Foundation -- to fight against the coronavirus pandemic. Designed for medics around the world to communicate and share experiences on treating COVID-19, GMCC provides doctors with free teleconferencing and live chat. Also as part of the program, a handbook on prevention and treatment of COVID-19, compiled by China's frontline medics, is offered free of charge online.

The Chinese mainland reported 31 newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 Sunday, according to the National Health Commission March 30. And 30 of them were imported cases, bringing the total number of its kind to 723. The overall confirmed cases on the mainland had reached 81,470 by the end of Sunday, including 2,396 patients who were still being treated, altogether 75,770 patients who had been discharged after recovery, and 3,304 people who died of the disease. By the end of Sunday, 641 confirmed cases including four deaths had been reported in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), 38 confirmed cases in the Macao SAR, and 298 in Taiwan including three deaths. A total of 118 patients in Hong Kong, ten in Macao and 39 in Taiwan had been discharged from the hospital after recovery.
