On August 18, Chongqing Municipal People’s Government signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Peking University. It is another outstanding achievement of the city in the introduction of science and technology (S&T) innovation resources this year following Tsinghua University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. With this agreement, Peking University will efficiently share its high-quality S&T education resources with relevant units in Chongqing, and the city will accelerate the building of an S&T innovation center with national influence.

According to the agreement, Chongqing will join hands with Peking University to build a big data institute in the city in the early stage. In the future, the city is also going to jointly erect a batch of high-level research platforms with Peking University and promote the construction of a scientific center in the Western (Chongqing) Science City.

The two sides will also actively promote the transformation of S&T achievements and cooperation in the medical field, and explore new modes of industry-university-research cooperation. They plan to support the launch of several S&T innovation projects in Chongqing and improve the health and well-being of the people. In addition, Chongqing and Peking University are slated to carry out in-depth cooperation in such aspects as strategic decision-making consultation, the application of the “Double-First Class” initiative in Chongqing’s colleges and universities, and personnel exchange and training.

Up to now, Chongqing has signed contracts to introduce resources from 11 world-renowned universities as well as 18 “Double-First Class” universities, eight universities with “Double First-Class” disciplines, eight national famous scientific research institutes, and 11 research academies of Fortune Global 500 enterprises in China. These universities and enterprises have built 70 scientific research platforms of various types and gathered more than 800 scientific researchers at all levels. Among them, there is one Nobel Laureate (a scientist and his/her team), eight academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, one foreign academician, and more than 300 people with doctorates or senior professional titles.

Chongqing will continue to advance the introduction of S&T innovation resources and pool more global high-quality S&T education resources in the city based on the model of “one city, multiple parks.”
