By XINYI LI|Dec 30,2020

On the evening of December 21, the Chinese Museums Association announced the fourth batch of national museum rating results. Seventy-four museums across the country were rated as first-class national museums, including the Chongqing Three Gorges Migration Memorial (Wanzhou Museum) and Dazu Rock Carvings Museum. So far, five museums in Chongqing have been rated as first-class national museums.

Dazu Rock Carvings Museum

The Dazu Rock Carvings Museum collection mainly includes the remains of the grotto temples on Beishan Mountain, Baoding Mountain, Nanshan Mountain, Shimen Mountain, and Shizhuan Mountain (collectively called Dazu Rock Carvings), as well as the cultural relics housed in the storeroom. There are 75 cultural relics protection units at various levels, with over 50,000 statues and over 100,000 characters of inscriptions. The museum has collected 673 pieces (sets) of cultural relics, totaling 6,489 items.

Dazu Rock Carvings Museum

In 1999, UNESCO inscribed Dazu Rock Carvings on the World Heritage List.

Currently, the museum's permanent exhibition "Art Nirvana—Dazu Rock Carvings Exhibition" covers an area of about 5,000 m2 with a total length of areas available for the display of 808 m. With the theme of "Dazu Treasures," the exhibition displays nearly 1,000 large stone-based cultural relics in the form of high-resolution pictures, documents, digital images, and multimedia. In this way, it demonstrates the dissemination of grotto art from India to Dazu, the demonstration role of Dazu Rock Carvings in Chinese grotto art, the research and protection of Dazu Rock Carvings, the inscription for World Heritage of Dazu Rock Carvings, the restoration of Thousand-hand Bodhisattva statue, and so forth.

Chongqing Three Gorges Migration Memorial (Wanzhou Museum)

The Chongqing Three Gorges Migration Memorial (Wanzhou Museum) is the only theme memorial built to commemorate the feat of millions of immigrants in the Three Gorges area. It is also an important center for collecting, protecting, research, and exhibition of historical culture and immigrant culture in the Three Gorges area.
