Chongqing is the first city in China to host Paz Viola’s solo exhibition and his different oil paintings series are put on exhibition this time. These works with abundant colors and curves depict imaginary landscapes out of the real world. For example, the Musical Interpretation series displayed in the exhibition are created by the artist after he listened to Chinese music in Beijing. According to Paz Viola, the best way to describe his work is landscapes inhabited by the self, a realm that is both personal and universal, and something he would like to share with the world.

When it came to his impression of Chongqing, the artist said he loved this beautiful city, and people here were very friendly. He planned to live in Chongqing for a while to create some paintings inspired by Chongqing’s landscape, culture, delicacies, and so forth. He hoped soon he would host another solo exhibition with the theme of Chongqing. He said landform features of Chongqing like mountain ranges, winding roads, and rivers matched with his paintings.

Self-taught artist Mauricio Paz Viola embarked on his artistic journey early in life. He has participated in various art competitions in his native Uruguay and abroad. His works have been displayed in galleries and museums in United States, Italy, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, and others. Meanwhile, his works have been featured in doctoral studies programs in art in universities in Chile, Mexico, Argentina, and Spain, and they are also frequently featured in magazines and art books such as Latin American Plastic Art Annual Review, High Impact: the Art of Visual (New York).
