Chongqing and Kazakhstan maintain close personnel exchanges. Government leaders of Chongqing have led delegations to visit the country for cooperation. Economic and trade, logistics, and artistic groups also visited Kazakhstan to establish partnerships. Political and commercial senior officials from Almaty of Kazakhstan came to Chongqing several times to seek cooperation opportunities.

In 2020, Chongqing's exports to Kazakhstan hit 634 million yuan (about 97.8 million U.S. dollars), up 23% year on year. From January to June 2021, Chongqing's exports to Kazakhstan posted a year-on-year growth of 351% to over 900 million yuan.
Kazakhstan is one of China Railway Express's most important strategic partners (Yu Xin ou) and the current destination of Chongqing-Central Asia freight trains. 80% of China-Europe freight trains have to pass the Dostyk Port in Kazakhstan.
In May 1999, Chongqing and Almaty established a friendly and cooperative relationship and signed a cooperation agreement. In 2009, Chongqing Municipal People's Congress reached close parliamentary relations with the Almaty City Council and signed a cooperation agreement.
In September 2013, Chongqing held "Sensing China through the New Silk Road — Culture Mission for Chongqing-Sinkiang-Europe International Railway" cultural, economic, and trade exchange activities in Almaty. In February 2014, a cultural delegation from Chongqing visited Kazakhstan to celebrate the Spring Festival.
In November 2014, Express-K's president led a media delegation to Chongqing for interviews and reports.
In December 2015, the Department of European-Central Asian Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Xinhua News Agency led the senior think tank delegation composed of members from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan to Chongqing for communication.
In May 2016, the fifth Annual Meeting of Students from Kazakhstan in China, sponsored by the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the People's Republic of China, was held at Southwest University.
In December 2017, "2017 Sensing China (Chongqing) — Exhibition on Kazakhstan's Journey in Chongqing" opened in Almaty.
In August 2018, a delegation of mainstream outlets from Kazakhstan visited Chongqing, accompanied by representatives of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Republic of Kazakhstan.
In September 2018, the "2018 Sensing Chongqing — Tour in Kazakhstan" series was held at the National Library of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
In November 2019, as invited by the Consulate General of the People's Republic China in Almaty, the nine-member outstanding youth investigation group from Almaty Youth Center of Nur Otan Party visited Chongqing.
In November 2020, a regular cross-border highway lorry loaded with pipeline materials left Chongqing's Banan District for Pavlodar, Kazakhstan, marking the official opening of the Kazakhstan-bound line of Chongqing cross-border highway regular lorry.
