As one of the important countries along the Belt and Road and a full member state of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Pakistan maintains close economic, trade, and cultural exchanges with Chongqing.

Ⅰ. Important Visits

In May 2019, a delegation led by Taimur Saleem Khan Jhagra, Minister for Finance of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province of Pakistan, and Masood Khalid, the then Pakistani Ambassador to China, visited Chongqing to attend the 2019 SCO Heads of Region Meeting.

In early July 2021, Pakistani Ambassador to China Moinul Haque, Wu Jianghao, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs of China, and other ambassadors of South Asian countries to China came to Chongqing to attend the opening ceremony of China and South Asian Countries Poverty Alleviation and Cooperative Development Center and investigated Chongqing's progress in poverty alleviation and rural revitalization development.

II. Economic and Trade Exchanges

(I) Foreign Trade

In January-June 2021, the total foreign trade volume between Chongqing and Pakistan reached 2.21 billion yuan, up 170.7% year-on-year. Of the amount, the export volume was 2.185 billion yuan, up 170.7% year-on-year, and the import volume was 25 million yuan, up 173.2% year-on-year.

In 2020, Chongqing and Pakistan's total foreign trade volume reached 3.161 billion yuan, up 102.5% year-on-year. The export volume was 3.138 billion yuan, up 113.5% year-on-year, and the import volume was 23 million yuan, down 74.7% year-on-year.

(II) Foreign Investment

By the end of May 2021, 11 Pakistan-invested enterprises had been established in Chongqing, with a combined contracted foreign investment of 1,140,000 U.S. dollars and a total paid-in foreign investment of 550,000 U.S. dollars.

The main industries include manufacturing, wholesale, and retail, and the main large Pakistani enterprises in Chongqing include Chongqing Kelidi Industry Co., Ltd. Chongqing Jiongli Power Machinery Co., Ltd. John Joel Import and Export (Chongqing) Co., Ltd., Chongqing Jiansen Trading Co., Ltd., and Chongqing Anpingxin Trading Co., Ltd.

(III) Foreign Economic Exchanges

By the end of 2020, four Chongqing-based Chinese entities had made non-financial direct investments in four enterprises in Pakistan. Specifically, the actual investment has reached 8.7 million U.S. dollars, and the main fields involved include electrical machinery and equipment manufacturing, metal product manufacturing, machinery and equipment repair, and other manufacturing industries.

(IV) Trade in Services

In 2020, the executed contract value of Chongqing's offshore service outsourcing business to Pakistan was 17.86 million U.S. dollars, up 245.7% year-on-year. The main services include industrial design services, other R&D services, and software R&D services.

III. Educational Cooperation

(I) Overseas Talent Introduction

In 2018-2019, Chongqing engaged ten foreign experts and teachers from Pakistan with a long or short tenure through various types of talent introduction projects and plans at various levels.

(II) Special Programs of The Belt and Road Initiative

In 2019, the Chongqing Municipal Government Mayor Scholarship for Foreign Students of Silk Road Project funded 16 students from Pakistan to participate in the 30-day ICT management talent training program at Chongqing Industry Polytechnic College.
