Introduction to Chongqing-the Republic of Azerbaijan Exchanges

In recent years, Chongqing has maintained close cooperation with Azerbaijan in people-to-people exchanges, economic and trade cooperation, local friendly engagement, and other fields. Chongqing Lifan Technology Group has built an automobile assembly factory in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, and Chongqing's Jiangjin District has established local friendly exchange relationships with Sumgait City. After the outbreak of COVID-19, Jiangjin District donated a batch of anti-epidemic materials to its sister city Sumgait, Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijani Ambassador to China Akram Zeynalli visited Chongqing together with the Delegation of Envoys of SCO Member States to China in February 2018 and was invited to attend the Third Conference of the CICA Non-Governmental Forum in Chongqing in December 2019. In April 2021, Zeynalli headed a delegation to visit Chongqing. On behalf of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan, signed a memorandum of friendly cooperation between Chongqing and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic with Chongqing Mayor Tang Liangzhi.

After the outbreak of COVID-19, Jiangjin District donated a batch of anti-epidemic materials to its sister city Sumgait, Azerbaijan.

Introduction to Chongqing-the Republic of Armenia Exchanges

On February 23, 2018, Armenian Ambassador to China Sergey Manasaryan visited Chongqing together with the Delegation of Envoys of SCO Member States to China, and Chongqing Mayor Tang Liangzhi met the delegation.

In March 2018, Manasaryan was invited to visit Chongqing. In addition, he visited Chongqing Lifan Technology Group and Chongqing K.C Home e-commerce platform to discuss cooperation. He indicated to introduce and organize relevant Armenian companies to visit Chongqing and seek practical cooperation.   

In March 2018, Margaryan, Mayor of Armenia's capital Yerevan, sent a letter to Chongqing Mayor Tang Liangzhi, expressing the hopes to build sister-city ties and promote practical cooperation between the two cities. On April 8, Mr. Tang Liangzhi replied to Mr. Margaryan, positively responding to his hopes.

In September 2018, Chongqing sent a congratulatory letter to Mr. Margaryan for the 2800th anniversary of the founding of Yerevan.  

In March 2020, the Mayor of Yerevan Hayk Marutyan sent a letter to Mr. Tang Liangzhi, expressing his sympathy and support for Chongqing's combat against COVID-19.

From January to December 2020, the total export-import volume between Chongqing and Armenia stood at about 12 million yuan; from January to May 2021, the total export-import volume hit approximately 5.45 billion yuan.

Introduction to Chongqing-Cambodia Exchanges

I. High-level Mutual Visits

In April 2004, Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen visited Chongqing.

From December 10 to 14, 2004, Cambodia held activities of "Chongqing-Cambodia Week" in Chongqing. A delegation of 29 people from the Cambodian government and the field of culture led by the Cambodian Deputy Minister of Tourism Thong Khon came to Chongqing to partake in this activity. The activities included Cambodian folk song and dance performances, food tasting, and investment, trade and tourism promotion conferences.

On June 1, 2019, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Hor Namhong attended the "Belt and Road" Land-Sea Linkage Summit in Chongqing.

From June 6 to 9, 2021, Prak Sokhonn, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, led a delegation to attend the Special ASEAN-China Foreign Ministers' Meeting and the Sixth Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Chongqing.

II. Economic and Trade Engagement

In 2020, the total imports and exports between Chongqing and Cambodia came to 462 million yuan, down 33.5% yearly. The export value was 445 million yuan, and the import value was 16.79 million yuan. From January to May 2021, the foreign trade value between the two parties amounted to 286 million yuan, a year-on-year increase of 98.2%. The export value was 282 million yuan, and the import value was 4 million yuan.

As of the end of 2020, Chongqing had registered 11 Cambodian investment enterprises, with a registered investment of 260 million U.S. dollars, mainly involving non-ferrous metal mining, air transport, and agriculture. The relevant Chinese market entities include Chongqing New City Construction Co., Ltd., Chongqing Weisidun Information Technology Co., Ltd, and Chongqing Yihong Agriculture and Forestry Development Co., Ltd.

III. Other Exchanges

On December 11, 2004, the Cambodian Consulate General in Chongqing officially opened. In March 2012, the Chongqing Foreign and Overseas Chinese Affairs Office organized the "ASEAN-Chongqing Economic and Trade Delegation" to visit Cambodia. Chongqing Sanchai Power Group reached a cooperation agreement with Cambodian Yadong Trading Co., Ltd. The two sides agreed to export machines and equipment worth about 20 million yuan to Cambodia and planned to set up a factory in Cambodia in the second half of 2013.

In 2014, Huang Qifan, Mayor of Chongqing and Mayor of Cambodia's capital Phnom Penh signed the Agreement on Establishing Sister-city Relationship between Chongqing of the People's Republic of China and Phnom Penh of the Kingdom of Cambodia on January 29 and April 1, respectively. This signifies the official establishment of a sister-city relationship between Chongqing and Phnom Penh. Phnom Penh has become the second foreign capital city to establish sister-city relations with Chongqing after Bangkok, the capital of Thailand.

In June 2021, to support Cambodia's fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, the Chongqing Municipal People's Government donated a total of 10,000 isolation gowns, 10,000 protective suits, 5,000 protective masks, and 50,000 pairs of medical gloves to the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Phnom Penh.

 

Introduction to Chongqing- Nepal Exchanges

I. Important Visits

From September 10 to 13, 2015, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Nepal, Chongqing People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, Nepal-China Executive Council, and Chongqing Daily News Group successfully held the Nepal Cultural Week event in Chongqing Yuelai International Convention Center. Liu Guanglei, Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Chongqing Municipal Committee, attended the opening ceremony of the Chongqing Cultural Industry Expo and visited the Nepal Culture Exhibition Area. During Nepal Cultural Week, Tan Jialing, Deputy Mayor of Chongqing Municipal People's Government, and He Shizhong, Vice Chairman of Chongqing Municipal People's Political Consultative Conference, visited Nepal Culture Exhibition Area successively and had friendly exchanges with Anoop Bhattarai, Chairman of Nepal-China Executive Council. Exquisite handicrafts and Buddhist artworks from Nepal, including nearly 2,000 hand-painted Thangka works, Buddha bowls, wood carvings, and bronze sculptures, were exhibited, attracting nearly 100,000 visitors.

In May 2016, the Secretary-General of Nepal-China Executive Council, and Mangesh Lal Shrestha, President of Nepal Tarun Dal, visited Chongqing. The delegation attended the 19th China Chongqing International Investment and Global Sourcing Fair. It held a symposium with the Foreign Affairs Office of Chongqing Municipal People's Government, Chongqing Municipal Committee of the Communist Youth League, and other departments.

In June 2016, Anoop Bhattarai, Chairman of Nepal-China Executive Council, and Mangesh Lal Shrestha, President of Nepal Tarun Dal, led a delegation of young entrepreneurs from Nepal to visit Chongqing. The delegation had a symposium with young entrepreneurs in Chongqing organized by the Chongqing Municipal Committee of the Communist Youth League during the visit. Meanwhile, Chongqing Young Entrepreneurs' Association and Nepal Tarun Dal signed a memorandum of understanding on establishing an enterprise cooperation alliance, thereby forging a long-term cooperative relationship between Nepal and Chongqing. Moreover, the delegation also visited some enterprises in Chongqing, such as China Chang'an Automobile Group, Jinshan Science & Technology (Group) Co., Ltd, and Chongqing Haifu Medical Technology Co., Ltd.

In September 2017, Ananda Prasad Pokharel, Member of the Parliament of Nepal's Dolakha District, led a delegation of parliament members and representatives from northern Nepal's border districts to visit Chongqing. During the visit, the delegation held a symposium with the Foreign Affairs Office of Chongqing Municipal People's Government and visited Chongqing Coffee Exchange, Liangjiang New Area Comprehensive Market Supervision Platform, Liangjiang New Area Service Trade Industrial Park, and other places.

II. Economic and Trade Exchanges

(I) Foreign Trade

In January-June 2021, the total foreign trade volume between Chongqing and Nepal reached 75 million yuan, up 286.3% year-on-year. The export volume was 75 million yuan, up 286.3% year-on-year, and the import volume was zero.

Introduction to Chongqing-Turkey Exchanges

I. High-level Mutual Visits

On August 7, 2015, Liu Qiang, Deputy Mayor of Chongqing, met with the Representative of Onur Air in Chongqing, calling for cooperation between the company and related departments in Chongqing to accelerate the preparation for opening new air routes. Later, the Chongqing-Istanbul non-stop flights, operated by Onur Air, have won approval from civil aviation authorities of China and Turkey and will be officially launched at an appropriate time. On November 26, 2015, Chen Lvping, Deputy Mayor of Chongqing, met with Burhanettin Kocamaz, Mayor of Mersin, in Chongqing, to promote the incorporation of the city's relevant companies in the construction of rail transit systems in Mersin. In September 2015, a working group of the Foreign Affairs Office of Chongqing Municipal People's Government, assigned by the Chongqing Municipal People's Government, visited Istanbul to discuss establishing a sister city relationship. In June 2016, Kadir Topbaş, Mayor of Istanbul and President of United Cities and Local Governments, wrote a letter to Huang Qifan, then-Mayor of Chongqing, saying the Municipal Council of Istanbul had agreed to establish a sister city relationship with Chongqing and sincerely invited him to visit Istanbul, to sign the agreement concerned. In December 2016, Kadir Topbaş wrote another letter to Huang Qifan, inviting him to visit Istanbul in April 2017 to discuss friendly cooperation and sign the agreement to establish the sister city relationship.

II. Economic and Trade Engagement

In 2020, Chongqing's foreign trade volume with Turkey amounted to 3.292 billion yuan, up 56.5% year-on-year. The export volume was 3.131 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 59%, and the import volume was 161 million yuan, a year-on-year growth of 20.1%. From January to June 2021, the imports and exports between Chongqing and Turkey totaled 1.996 billion yuan, up 67% year-on-year. The exports registered 1.911 billion yuan, up 70.7% year-on-year, and the import volume was 85 million yuan, up 11.9% year-on-year.

By the end of 2020, four Chongqing-based Chinese entities made non-financial direct investments in 3 Turkish companies, with an actual investment of 20.48 million U.S. dollars, covering the automobile and production and supply of electric power and heat power industries.

 

Introduction to Chongqing- Sri Lanka Exchanges

I. High-level Mutual Visits

In December 2016, Karunasena Kodituwakku, Sri Lankan Ambassador to China, visited Chongqing. In September 2019, Chen Min'er, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the CPC Chongqing Municipal Committee, visited Sri Lanka.

In December 2019, Chamal Rajapaksa, former Speaker of the Parliament of Sri Lanka and State Minister of National Security & Disaster Management, came to Chongqing to attend the Third Conference of the CICA Non-Governmental Forum. Zhang Xuan, Director of the Standing Committee of Chongqing Municipal People's Congress, met with Chamal Rajapaksa and his delegation.

II. Economic and Trade Cooperation

From January to June 2021, Chongqing's foreign trade with Sri Lanka registered 145 million yuan, a year-on-year increase of 48%. The export volume was 144 million yuan, up 60.8% year-on-year, and the import volume was 1.39 million yuan, down 83.8% year-on-year.

III. Cultural Exchanges

In May 2016, Chongqing Tourism Bureau led a team to Sri Lanka for tourism promotion. In February 2019, the "Celebrating Spring Festival" — "A Land of Natural Beauty, A City with Cultural Appeal" Chongqing Art Troupe Show, undertaken by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, was held in Sri Lanka. Karu Jayasuriya, Speaker of the Parliament of Sri Lanka, and about 1,100 people enjoyed the show.

IV. Educational Cooperation

International Chinese Language Education

The Confucius Institute at the University of Kelaniya, established with Chongqing University, develops Chinese language teaching and promotes Chinese culture. In 2018, Chongqing assigned 13 people to Sri Lanka for international Chinese language education.

Special Programs of The Belt and Road Initiative

In 2018, Chongqing Jiaotong University undertook the 2018 Chongqing Municipal Government Mayor Scholarship for Foreign Students of Silk Road Project — Civil Engineering Advanced Construction Technology and Project Management Training Class, attracting 29 students from seven countries including Sri Lanka.

In February 2019, Chongqing held the "Happy Chinese New Year" celebrations in Sri Lanka.
