Located in the heart of Metro Vancouver, Burnaby is uniquely positioned as a hub for the City of Vancouver to connect to the Fraser Valley and other cities in British Columbia. With a population of over 200,000, Burnaby is the third-largest metropolitan city in BC. Burnaby is currently the most vibrant and commercial city in BC. It boasts the largest retail shopping center in BC. Burnaby, a star city on the west coast of Canada, has enjoyed vigorous and sustained growth during Mayor Corrigan's more than ten years in office and welcomes friendly relations and exchanges with countries in Asia and the Pacific, including China. In July 2009, according to McLean, the most influential magazine in Canada, Burnaby was rated as the first best-managed city in Canada. Burnaby's economy has gained momentum in recent years and is in a solid growth phase. Its economy is characterized by a heavy emphasis on science and technology industries with high-tech content. Some companies are at the top international level, especially in the fields of energy and biotechnology. Things like power development and solar energy research are featured in Burnaby. Numerous high-tech industrial parks in Burnaby are home to a large number of top Canadian and global companies.
In 2017, Burnaby city and Yubei district established a sister city relationship.
Exchanges between Yubei District and Burnaby
Friendly Exchanges. At the invitation of Derek Corrigan, Mayor of Burnaby, Columbia, Canada, Zhang Dekuan, Executive Deputy District Mayor of Yubei District, and his five-member delegation went to Canada for friendly exchanges from July 22-26, 2014. During the visit to Canada, the delegation and the government of Burnaby discussed the current situation of industrial development and future cooperation planning between the two sides. They signed a memorandum of understanding to establish friendly city relations and held an investment and trade promotion meeting in the Yubei District. A friendly urban cooperative relationship between the Yubei District of Chongqing and Burnaby City, Columbia, Canada, was established during the visit. The visit deepened the friendship between Chongqing and Burnaby, consolidated the foundation of Chongqing's opening to the outside world on all fronts, and achieved the expected results. The visit was a huge success.
On September 25, 2015, Mu Huaping, then-Secretary of Yubei District Party committee, went to Burnaby, Canada, and visited the headquarters of Ballard and ISTUARY, met with Paul, Minister of Economic and Trade Cooperation of Burnaby, and participated in the Yube-Burnaby Economic and Trade Cooperation Fair.
From March 14 to March 18, 2017, acting Mayor Paul McDonnell and his party paid a return visit to Yubei District to discuss cooperation in international education, new energy, and robotics. On the afternoon of March 15, 2018, the Burnaby delegation made a return visit to Yubei District and signed an agreement to form a sister city relationship. The agreement made it clear that the two sides would further strengthen economic, trade, and cultural exchanges and expand cooperation in scientific and technological innovation, intelligent manufacturing, biomedicine, and other fields. Based on the previous exchanges and collaboration, the two sides will take the opportunity of forming a friendship city relationship to establish closer ties and work together to make the flower of friendship bear more fruitful results.
Project cooperation After several negotiations and consultations, in October 2015, ISTUARY, an enterprise in Burnaby, settled in Xiantao International Big Data Valley, and its business incubator is now put into operation. In December 2015, Randall MacEwen, President and CEO of Ballard, a Burnaby-based company, and his delegation visited Yubei District. They signed a strategic cooperation memorandum with the district's government.
