Baidicheng, A Favored Tourist Destination Along The Three Gorges

Baidicheng (White Emperor City), a favored tourist destination, is situated at the entrance of Qutang Gorge, north of the Yangtze River, in Fengjie County, Chongqing. It is the best place to enjoy Kuimen and the special viewing platform set there is one of the best spots to take pictures of the landscape printed on the 10-yuan banknote. Li Bai, Du Fu, Bai Juyi and other famous poets wrote a pile of poems about the city, winning it the name of “City of Poetry”.

Baidicheng is eight kilometers away from Fengjie County. It stands against towering mountains and faces the Yangtze River. Magnificent landscapes make it a reputed attraction along the Three Gorges traveling route. Baidi Temple owns numerous tablet inscriptions, with as many as 1,000 antiques and handicrafts on exhibition. The famous Bashu Bronze Sword made during the Spring and Autumn Period is one of them. Tourists are all captivated by its consummate craft and highly praise ancient Ba people’s wisdom and skills. Two forests of tablets in east and west display over 70 greatly-preserved stone tablets. One from the Sui Dynasty boasts a history of around 1,400 years.

Baidicheng, featuring both natural and cultural landscapes, has become a must-visit destination for worldwide tourists when they visit the Three Gorges on the Yangtze River. Today’s Baidicheng dates back to Ming and Qing Dynasties, occupying buildings such as Mingliang Palace, Zhuge Liang Memorial Hall, Guan jing Pavilion and Wangjiang Building. Additionally, there are gilded sculptures of Liu Bei, Zhuge Liang, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei and the Bellows Gorge (Fengxiang Xia) where the ancient hanging coffins are located. Baidicheng became a beautiful island after the Three Gorges Project water level was raised to 175m. Colorful plants turn it into a special attraction in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area and people can take ships to the city directly. On May 25, 2006, Baidicheng, as a building complex of Ming and Qing Dynasties, was included in the sixth batch of major historical and cultural sites protected at the national level approved by the State Council.
