Since the birth of the automobile, safety has always been a primary focus of automotive research and development. Crash tests serve as a crucial part of testing vehicle safety. Located in Liangjiang New Area, Chongqing, China Automotive Engineering Research Institute Co., Ltd. (or “CAERI”) affiliated to China General Technology (Group) Holding Co., Ltd. recently has become China’s first joint laboratory officially recognized by Euro NCAP. CAERI is authorized to carry out crash tests and assessments related to Euro NCAP in China. This is a leap forward in China’s automobile industry, which indicates that the CAERI Crash Safety Laboratory can provide China’s automobile industry with more convenient development services that are recognized by the Euro NCAP.

The CAERI test crash

NCAP is short for “New Vehicle Assessment Program,” which is the most authoritative vehicle safety test. At present, China has relatively mature assessment procedures in this respect, and the EU, the United States, Japan, and other countries or regions also have relevant ones. Among these assessment procedures, the Euro NCAP implemented by the EU is recognized as the most rigorous in the world.

Founded in 1997, Euro NCAP aims to test the safety performance of vehicle models in European markets and provide authentic and independent assessments of automotive safety performance for automotive consumers. It has set up joint laboratories in Germany, Sweden, Italy, Spain, the UK, and the Netherlands. Each year, it regularly conducts crash tests on selected new vehicle models of the same level from the markets of 15 EU member countries and then announces the test results of the horizontal comparison. It also carries out statistical analysis and research on a traffic accident and casualty data, to put forward relevant suggestions for the formulation of standards and regulations as well as vehicle model R&D of automobile enterprises.

With fair, scientific, rigorous, and authoritative tests and assessments, it has been widely recognized inside and outside the automotive industry and has led the development of a global new vehicle test and assessment system. It has also played an extremely vital role in boosting technological upgrades of passive safety, active safety, intelligentization, and other fields of automobiles.

On July 1, 2019, the CAERI Crash Safety Laboratory was approved to conduct tests related to Euro NCAP.

Introduction to CAERI Crash Safety Laboratory

With advanced testing equipment and capabilities, professional testing engineers, and precise testing procedures, the CAERI Crash Safety Laboratory can provide automobile enterprises with comprehensive testing technical services such as announcement, R&D, certification and verification. To be more specific, it can carry out tests of front-impact, side-impact, rear impact, pole side impact, ramp rollover, corkscrew rollover, shoulder rollover, and car-to-car angular test at an arbitrary speed ratio of passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles. The maximum tractive capacity of its traction system is up to 5 tons at 120 km/h and up to 25 tons at 80 km/h. Equipped with an accelerating sled test room, a body strength test room, a pedestrian protection test room, and a safety belt test room, its test capability covers technical standards and regulations of automotive passive safety and new vehicle assessment procedures of various major countries and regions around the world.
