Wanzhou District Welcomes You to Explore Its Abundant Urban and Natural Sceneries

Chongqing - Wanzhou District is Chongqing’s second-largest urban core area 228km away from downtown Chongqing. "Wanzhou" literally means "myriad-prefecture," where "myriad rivers converge, and myriad traders gather." Located on the upper reach of Yangtze River and at the central part of the Three Gorges Reservoir, it borders Sichuan Province to the northwest and Hubei Province to the southeast. Wanzhou District is effectively a logistic hub and boasts abundant resources in culture and tourism.

Wanzhou Grand Waterfall in Wanzhou District is the widest waterfall in Asia. It covers 9739.5m2, with 151m at width and 64.5m at height. On a sunny day, a fabulous rainbow will appear in front of the waterfall. The panorama of the waterfall is breathtaking. There is a 1600m2 cave behind the pouring waterfall, which runs tens of meters in depth. The cave offers another optimal angle to appreciate the fairyland.

Tanzhang Gorge is located in the southeast of Wanzhou District. It is a scenic canyon area consisting of limestone, covering an area of 69 square kilometers. The forest coverage rate amounts to 64.7% here. Water in the gorge is quite clear and unpolluted. Water meets the cliffs and then turns into ponds. There are altogether 48 ponds in the Tanzhang Gorge, and each lake is a perfect natural swimming pool. A variety of wild animals live in the Tanzhang Gorge, including golden pheasants, white magpies, river deer, otters, hedgehogs, and monkeys. Enjoy amazing natural scenery, and visitors can also take part in the exotic local activities of folk customs.

Wanzhou is the cradle for Ba culture that goes back to the Warring Kingdoms Period. In 1989, a tiger button Ba-style bronze drum with the history of over 2000 years was discovered in Ganning Reservoir flood discharge tunnel of Wanzhou District. Due to its big size and excellent sound quality, the bronze drum is regarded as “the King of Ba-Style Bronze Drums” and is the treasure of the Three Gorges Museum. Through the well- preserved Tiger Button Ba-style Bronze Drum, one can still get a glimpse into how people lived on this land thousands of years ago. According to the researchers from the Three Gorges Museum, patterns including boats, fish, birds, men with wings on the bronze drum holds the information about the main transportation of that time and the ancient people’s hunting and fishing based livelihood.
