Chongqing University has established a great depth of cooperative relationship with 186 institutions of higher education in 32 countries and regions. It has about 20 international cooperative platforms including national-level bases for the Programme of Introducing Talents of Discipline to Universities and international joint research laboratories of the Ministry of Education. The Chongqing University-University of Cincinnati Joint Co-op Institute has achieved remarkable results. Chongqing University encourages and supports teachers and students to study abroad for academic visits and exchanges, with the average annual number of students going abroad for academic visits topping 3,700.

Committed to promoting Chinese culture, Chongqing University has set up Confucius Institutes of Betong Municipality, Confucius Institutes in Pisa, and Confucius Institutes of La Trobe University. It has been selected as the first cohort of Demonstration universities for quality education of international students in China authorized by the Chinese Ministry of Education, offering 45 English-taught master's and doctoral programs and more than 300 English-taught degree courses.
