On May 28, the Restaurant Service project of Belt and Road International Skills Competition (BRISC), held at Hall S3 in Chongqing International Expo Center, was in full swing.

This competing project presented the pre-meal preparation work for a banquet to citizens of Chongqing. The competitors had spent over two hours to prepare a banquet for six people.

“Three, two, one, start!”

Upon hearing the timekeeper’s order, competitors standing before the stage acted quickly. There was nothing on the preparation table except for several pieces of white napkins. The first step for these competitors is to fold these napkins into different shapes.

Michaela Eggertna from Austria, wearing a pair of white gloves, was folding a square napkin into the triangle shape, and a diamond was formed after she turned over the two edges. Afterward, Michaela pinched one corner of the napkin slightly with two fingers, and before the visitors could notice, the simple square napkin was reshaped into the form of a stand shirt collar.

Just within three minutes, the preparation desk in front of her had five well-placed napkins in similar diamond forms but different styles. Some were like stretching leaves, while some were the white tropical fish.

Different from the diamond theme of Michaela, Yu Pei-chi from Hong Kong aimed to show the three-dimensional charm of the napkins. On her preparation desk, there stood three napkin-folded “bamboo joints” with little differences. Some were erecting, while some featured swaying leaves. Beside her, a foreign competitor had managed to fold the napkins into flowers with three and five petals.

All the players competing in this project were required to fold the napkins into at least five forms and styles, and on their preparation desks, the artworks were different from one another.

In the competing project of Restaurant Service, Charterfarin Kolnerrowen, wearing a beaming smile, attracted the attention of many visitors. She believed, “Cheering up customers is a part of our service, and the waiter and waitress should keep smiling while serving people.”
