Chongqing is a mountain city with many surrounding mountains. Mountain climbing has, therefore, become a way for many locals to relax. Despite its large quantities, people tend to flock to those popular destinations every holiday. Don’t worry about it! There are some unexpected destinations. Let’s check it out!

Tiewan Mountain

There is a Douhua or Tofu pudding shop located at Xinglong Town, Yubei District. The Tofu pudding is hand-made with mountain spring water. It tastes delicious. A good way to start your journey is to have lunch first here.

The way up to the mountain is behind the shop. The mountain resembles a big bowl in shape and is unique with sparse vegetation coverage. It is a typical stone mountain for mountain climbing. Its relatively steep roads require high physical strength.

Location: Near Sanshe, Xinglong Town, Yubei District

Route: You can drive from the Airport Expressway to National Highway 210 (G210) and then to Xinglong Town.

Limao Mountain

The gently-sloping road at Geleshan Town offers a perfect option for relaxing. There are dilapidated temples and abandoned villas in a modern style but surrounded by weeds. In addition, the large wooded area can help you to get more fresh air.

Location: Geleshan Town, Shapingba District

Route: You can take a bus to Geleshan Town, then go straight towards Yangjiaping for about half an hour to the left-hand fork, and finally reach the destination.

Rentou Mountain

You may not get a chance to enjoy the splendid scenery on the mountain, but don’t worry, you will get a river by walking along the path and climbing over the mountain. You can fish there and taste the famous Maoxi braised food nearby!

Location: Near Maoxi Town, in the direction of the Haier Road, Jiangbei District

Route: You can drive towards Haier Road to get to the Maoxi Town.

Laoying Mountain

Laoying Mountain rises alone in the Gele Mountain. Standing on the top of it, you can overlook more than half of Shapingba District in case of the high visibility. Moreover, there are mostly pine trees, together with such animals like eagles, squirrels, rabbits, pheasants, and egrets.

Route: It is near Shandong Village. You can cross the third tractor road on the left of Beikoushe to head for it.

Xiangshui Mountain

As the name suggests, little streams in Xiangshui Mountain are the main option for enjoying the scenery. You can see the streams flowing down and hear them when you are walking into the mountain. It abounds with birds, but you certainly have no idea about their names. Its quiet surroundings are perfect for a picnic.

Location: Tianba Village, Zhongliangshan, Shapingba District

Route: You can follow the two 200-meter trails on the right of the entrance to Tianba Village, then turn left to the pond, and finally reach the entrance to the mountain.

Hejiabao

Surrounded by low-range mountain ridges, Hejiaba mainly boasts cultural landscapes. Its old street abounds with Taoist temples and ancestral halls, by the likes of the Li’s Family Ancestral Hall and the Bao’s Family Ancestral Hall, which belong to the once local distinguished families. The furnishings and decorations in the halls are unique and mainly in the early 20th century.

Hejiabao

Location: It is near Wubao Town, the southeast of Yubei District.

Route: You can drive to Chongqing-Yichang Expressway through an inner ring road, Xingsheng Avenue, Wolong Road, and to the Mingyue Mountain Tunnel successively, and finally reach it.

Jiandao Mountain

In the middle of Jiandaoshan Forest Park, there is a large square terrace surrounded by coniferous forest, with stone tables and benches in the middle. You can sit down and rest if you are tired. The mountain is steeper near its edges and relatively flat elsewhere.

Location: Jiandaoshan Forest Park, Dadukou District

Route: There are two options to reach it: One is from Tianba and the other is from Yuqing Temple.

ZhongBa Island and Guiting Island

These two islands are not mountains but still have some interesting places. There are many wild birds on them. You can see four Chinese characters “Min Jiang Yi Shu” written by Su Tungpo on the mountain wall at the water’s edge.

ZhongBa Island and Guiting Island

Location: Xiaonanhai Town, Dadukou District

Route: You can take a train or bus to Xiaonanhai Town, Dadukou District, and then take a boat along the river to get to the two islands.
