When going through the airport security check, passengers now only need to present their ID cards and their smiling face. So long, paper boarding passes. Tested at the Hohhot Baita International Airport of Inner Mongolia, China, this facial recognition system might come soon to other major airports around China, including Chongqing. The Research Center for Intelligent Security Technology of Chongqing Institute of Green and Intelligent Technology of Chinese Academy of Sciences has developed this software, known as Human-Aided ID Verification Intelligent Security System.

Facial recognition systems, installed at the gates will verify their identities by matching the passenger's face against their ID card. Once verified, passengers will scan their faces to get through ID re-verification at security check lane and move onto the boarding gate.

The advantage of this, beyond the environmental aspect of saving paper, is a clear leap forward in efficiency. During the trial, the average clearance rate per person at the Hohhot Baita International Airport decreased to less than 6 seconds. The Airport Security Check Intelligent Recognition System works with other facial recognition systems, which are also developed by the Research Institute, to realize whole-process facial recognition. Next time you do away with your paper boarding pass, be sure to remember to smile.
