Cardiovascular disease is now becoming the number one cause of death and atherosclerosis is its primary cause. Since the immune system of people can clear most part of the medicine, traditional therapy is hampered by a low pesticide effect but significant side effects. In response to that, Professor Wang Guixue from the Bioengineering College of Chongqing University leads his team to apply bionic technologies to develop nanoparticles. It turns out that erythrocyte membrane-enveloped nanoparticles effectively inhibit the progression of atherosclerosis.

“I have been fighting with it for over 20 years!” Professor Wang said that cardiovascular disease now was the top killer—on average, one people would die of it per 11 seconds in China. And atherosclerosis is the primary cause of such disease. Taking lipid-lowering or anti-inflammatory drugs orally to inhibit the progression of atherosclerosis remains the main therapy of Arteriosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease. However, such method suffers from problems like low pesticide effect, slow effectiveness, and other significant side effects.
