The Long-Standing Historical Backdrop

The War of Resistance Auditorium is located near the back-school-gate of Area A of Chongqing University. In the meantime, the warm yellow auditorium stands among green plants. According to the historical materials of Chongqing University, National Central University (the predecessor of a dozen universities including Nanjing University and Southeast University), moved west to Chongqing after Japan launched an all-out war of aggression against China in July 1937. Chongqing University provided about 13.3 hectares of land there for National Central University to build its school building.

Moreover, Chongqing University cooperated with National Central University in the school building from 1937 to 1946. The two universities shared teachers and teaching resources, recognized the credits, and shared resources during that time. To meet the demands of the better education in 1938, Gu Mengyu, who served as the president of National Central University, organized to build the auditorium. After they went back to Nanjing in November 1946, the auditorium was left to Chongqing University, as a hall. Decades past, however, the auditorium was identified as a dilapidated building. Supported by the Ministry of Education and the Culture Committee of Shapingba District, Chongqing University commenced the renovation this March.

The Old Buiding in Modern Time

The War of Resistance Auditorium is the building integrates Chinese and Western architectural style. In addition, it looks rectangular and covers an area of thousands of square meters. The traditional Chinese-style tiles cover on it. The red doors and windows, matched with archways and verandas, simple but elegant, complement each other with the surrounding.

“We have difficulty in 3 aspects. First of all, the wall, due to years of weathering and soaking, almost can't stand up. Furthermore, most of the wooden support and beam inside have been corroded by termites. The last is the soundproof treatment of walls.” According to the introduction of Nie Huiyuan, Deputy Director of Infrastructure Department, Chongqing University, the construction party considered various ways during the process and finally achieved the restoration as the past.

Chongqing University plans to use the renovated auditorium as a place for performances, exhibitions, and activities.
