Marshal Nie Rongzhen Memorial Hall

Marshal Nie Rongzhen Memorial Hall, established in 1999, is located in the suburb of Jiangjin District, Chongqing. More than 3,000 cultural relics and pictures, sculptures and oil paintings, and other art forms are displayed with acoustic, optical, and electronic technologies to present Marshal Nie Rongzhen's glorious life vividly.

Nie Rongzhen (1899-1992) commanded the armored units of the People's Liberation Army during the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. As one of the founders of the People's Republic of China, he became involved in the military-industrial complex. He headed the research units which were responsible for China’s successful development of nuclear arms.

One of the first national education bases

It is a national patriotism education demonstration base, a 4A-level tourist scenic spot, and a Chongqing national defense education base.

The 350-acre memorial hall is composed of the weapon square, the bronze statue square, the life story exhibition hall, and the multi-functional demonstration hall. The main hall displays nearly 300 photos, more than 400 cultural relics and historical materials, and over 3,000 photos.

The collection contains 46 volumes of Marshal Nie Rongzhen's fonds, more than 12,000 books, and nearly 600 paintings that praise the marshal. A large number of precious audio and video, pictures, text materials, and rich exhibits of defense-related science and technology are in this hall.

Compared with similar memorials, Marshal Nie Rongzhen Memorial Hall boasts distinctive exhibit arrangements: a larger number of exhibits and a wider application of high technology. More than 40 models are displayed to demonstrate China's cutting-edge defense science and technology achievements. Acoustic, optical, and electronic technologies are widely applied to empower many exhibits with the function of demonstration. Visitors have free access to three computers (including one with a touch screen) to search for the life information of the marshal. All of these are eye-opening for visitors who are educated in patriotism, revolutionary tradition, popular science, and defense awareness.

The China satellite launch demonstration hall highlights the exhibit arrangements of Marshal Nie Rongzhen Memorial Hall. Covering a land area of 413 square meters, the hall, 10.2 meters high, can accommodate 250 spectators at a time. Through the combined effects of the topographic sand table and computer, sound, light, and electronic technologies, the demonstration hall simulates the magnificent scene of launching rocket satellites at the Xichang Satellite Launch Center Show, offering visitors immersive experiences.

Marshal Nie Rongzhen Memorial Hall was selected as one of the first national education bases to popularize science in 2021-2025.

Nie Rongzhen's Former Residence

The former residence of Marshal Nie Rongzhen, formerly known as the Stone Yard, is located in Langjia Village, Wutan Town, Jiangjin District, Chongqing. It covers an area of about 60,000 square meters, including a land area of 5,630 square meters, of which the floor area reaches 630 square meters. The residence, with 17 rooms, sits in the west and faces to the east.

The name of the former residence was inscribed by Comrade Jiang Zemin. Nie Rongzhen lived there for 15 years when he was a child. In 1914, he went to a nearby rented courtyard with his father. In 1919, he left Jiangjin for a work-study program in France. In the autumn of 1923, the Stone Yard was burned by bandits, leaving only two wing rooms in the northwest corner.
