Q18. How can ordinary families disinfect their homes?

a. The Novel Coronavirus is sensitive to heat and can be destroyed when temperatures are maintained at 56℃ or above for 30 minutes. Multiple disinfectants such as chlorine disinfectants, ethyl alcohol, iodine, and peroxide can also kill this virus.

b. After returning home from outside, hands should be promptly washed and disinfected by running water and hand sanitizer. Hands and skin should be disinfected by 75% ethyl alcohol, iodophor, or other disinfectants.

c. The solution with an effective chlorine concentration of 250-500 mg/L (prepared by chlorine disinfectants such as 84 disinfectant and bleaching powder) can be used for the disinfection of the house environment through wiping surfaces or soaking.

d. Try to wash towels once per day, frequently change and wash sheets, quilts, and clothing. Dry them at high temperatures, if possible. Cups, tableware, etc. should be disinfected by sterilizer or in boiling water for 15 minutes after cleaning them with running water.

Q19. What else should people cohabiting with suspected patients do?

a. When symptoms appear amongst family members, everybody should take preventative measures, and arrange travel to a hospital as soon as possible, avoiding public transportation.

b. After sending family members with symptoms to the hospital, their room and whatever they have been in contact with (such as the floor, bathroom, furniture surface, door handles, and tableware) should be disinfected.

Q20. What are the extra measures needed when living with infected patients?

Thorough disinfection should be carried out on floors, walls, furniture surfaces such as tables, chairs, door handles, daily necessities such as tableware, crockery, clothing and bedding, toys, and toilets. Terminal disinfection of this type is usually carried out by professionals. Please contact your local CDC for details. Other family members and other close contacts should receive medical observation for 14 days.
