Brighter Horizons① – Rural Households Enjoy Security in Healthcare

Chongqing- The recent policy drive to alleviate poverty among rural households in China has focused on a number of key areas. Since the policy of 'Two non-concerns and three guarantees' came into effect, which aims to provide security in food and clothing whilst safeguarding the right to education, quality housing, and medical care, life in town and village communities has taken a dramatic turn for the better.

Medical expenses, in particular, have been the main cause of households slipping back into poverty, as the high cost of treatment and lack of insurance coverage meant rural communities were vulnerable to medical debt with little recourse for financial assistance. Now that healthcare is guaranteed under a new government insurance scheme, this widespread issue has been finally resolved.

In two case examples, we traveled to Zhongyi Town in the heart of Shizhu County, Chongqing, to learn first hand how policy has not only lifted them out of poverty but is leading the way to a brighter and more prosperous future through economic development.
