Chongqing Science City Enterprise Made a Technical Breakthrough in Materials

Chongqing Sound Optoelectronic Think Union Electronics Co., Ltd. independently developed scintillation crystal materials, according to the Western (Chongqing) Science City.

This technical breakthrough fuels China's development in the fields of medical care, security inspection, and high-energy physics.

Scintillation crystal emits flashes when transforming X-rays and gamma rays or charged particles into ultraviolet photons or visible light photons. Simply put, the scintillation crystal flashes when it catches these invisible high-energy rays. This technology is used to produce the core components of high-end X-ray security inspection machines and medical equipment.

"Previously, the core components of medical and security inspection equipment like X-ray machines and CT machines were mainly imported from Hitachi, Mitsubishi, and other Japanese enterprises," said Ding Yuchong, the person in charge of the development of the technology.

Chongqing Sound Optoelectronic Think Union Electronics Co., Ltd. has spent years developing the most advanced scintillation crystal materials with independent intellectual property rights.

Headway has been made in the technology R&D in the fields of crystal growth, performance characterization, processing, and component production. Moreover, the four-inch scintillation crystal materials "Ce: LYSO" with a short decay time have been put into mass production.

"The production of large-size scintillation crystal materials can greatly lower the production cost of crystal materials," said Ding. "It not only meets the requirements for high-end applications but also raises technical standards in this field and technically supports China's development in medical care, security inspection, high-energy physics, and nuclear physics. In this way, it fuels the coordinated development of the entire industrial chain."
